It has been a while since I last had the Nottingham based emcee, singer, song writer and drummer, Danny on the blog. In fact, I was introduced to him via Pandamonium when they collaborated on the EP TimesChange, which I reviewed back in December of 2024.

Danny is now back with his debut album release which he has been writing since 2022. When I wrote the review back in 2024, I felt then that Danny was one of those to watch on the UK scene, so to have him back with a full album, it will be interesting to see how far he has come in the last year or so.

Better Late Than Naver is a big fifteen track album and see’s Danny flying solo on most of this one. The features come from 1^st Blood, Kenny Cadence and the legendary Scorzayzee, plus Angelface. There is also big line up of producers providing the beats, and these include Danny himself alongside NEO Hannan, XavrPryme, Tom Hodson, KPrymetheJaegar, Wigz, MaugzMade, and Zar!

With that said, let’s not hang around and get straight into it…

The album kicks off with JD’s Intro coming from my good friend John Dugan aka JD Hip Hop Reviews (Who also gave me the heads up on this album the same day as Danny), here we find JD hitting up Danny about the album and bringing a focus to the appearance of one Angelface, do we have a biter here or something else?

Step By Step is produced by NEO Hannan and brings a trap style beat with a sparce beat, synth sound and that high paced cymbal sound that gives this one a vibe that does get you focused. Here we have Danny giving us the lowdown on who he is and how he approaches life, giving us a step-by-step guide to how he got where he is now and how it is going to take him further. Now we have a bit more of an insight into Danny as an artist, Movin’ sees XavrPryme take on production duties with a more head nod beat that is backed with guitar vibes that give this an upbeat feel. This on has a far more personal feel to it as Danny details the hurdles he has faces and overcome as he has walked the path of life. This gives us more of a look at who he is behind the mic and the foundations he builds on as an artist focusing on his dreams.

No Extinguisher features 1^st Blood and is produced by Tom Hodson. The heavy beat and keys give this one a fresh sound that seems to tweak at your nerves with each keynote while also tempting you to bounce to the beat. This one is two emcees giving you a demonstration of their lyrical prowess and wordplay, one of those you just need to sit back and enjoy. KPrymetheJaegar brings production on Sunshine with a sound that has a laid-back, but heavy sound that will get you moving to this one and definitely puts you in mind of the fresh summer days to come. There is an uplifting air about this one that seems to fit with being sat alone ruminating over things as you watch the sun go down. Just thinking over things and how the music has helped you through the bad times. Rhythm & The Rhyme is produced by Wigz and brings us a sound that has synth notes as the main sound mixed with bass and laid-back percussion, giving this one a sound that has a strangely infectious sound. There is also a comedic use of a zipper to bring a scratch sound. Here we get the sense that Danny encompassing many aspects of his life, from his relationship with music and his family to looking at the world and society around him. Fitting so much into just over four minutes is a tall order but, he does it perfectly here. Far From Friends is produced by Tom Hodson and has a head nod beat backed by horns that has a heavier sound overall that gives you the sense this one has a stronger more emotive edge. This one has an edge that seems to hint at mental health and those times you wrestle with your own thoughts about what is really most important, who is a friend and who is a foe, and much more. There is also a bit of a comedic edge to this one two which allows Danny to speak on this without getting too deep and making too emotive.    

Next up is the Angelface Interlude, a little skit that seems to hint at an alter ego for Danny? Angelface features on The Beast Within, produced by KPrymetheJaegar, this one has a solid head nod sound that will get you bouncing from the get-go. This one has a light-hearted vibe to it as Angelface makes his debut, as the alter-ego of Danny Riggs. These guys show the yin and yang of one man’s character but done in a way that has that tongue-in-cheek aspect that you can just enjoy with a smile, especially that comedic scratch sound.

Crazy Daily is produced by Wigz alongside Danny Riggs and brings a sound that has this big bass and drum sound with a background vibe that has this electronic sampled vibe. Altogether the sound might appear to be too much but, it gets you nodding for sure. On the face of it this one might just appear to be one of those rap braggadocio tracks but, while there is some of that mixed in with some jus for fun wordplay, there are also more that a few references to more of those hurdles he has overcome in life. So, this one gives a great overall look at Danny and where he sees himself going and the energy, he has inside to get there. MaugzMade brings production on Pleasure 2 The Max with a sound that has this mix of heavy drum beat mixed with electronic elements and a guitar sound that gives you this wicked sound you can’t help but move to. Here Danny gives us his own version of track that is dedicated to that special someone in his life. Not a love song but, more of tale of how two people’s energies can work in tandem. MaugzMade continues with production on What’s Up, where the sound has a different guitar vibe alongside a heavy beat, giving this one a deeper sound with a reflective edge. The message here is one of making a change in the world; a world that is full of darkness, power struggles, control and death. The people in power are the ones doing this to the world and its peoples, and the key is to keep yourself safe and not listen to the fake news and lies being perpetrated by those in power.

The penultimate full track of the album is Roads, which features Kenny Cadence and is produced by Tom Hodson. This one has cuts and wicked funky beat that will have you moving while this electronic siren type sound will grip your awareness, even though I feel the track would still work without it. There is a depth to the words within this one as main message seems to focus on the fact that you should not get too far ahead of yourself in this industry, but pace yourself and take you time getting where you need to go, because the more time you take, will help you progress at the pace which is right for you and allow to mature, and not burn out before your time. The final full track of the album is Back 2 Back which features the legendary Scorzayzee and production from ZAR! (Who also featured on the Times Change EP). This one takes the sound back to a more grime sound; one that has a heavy beat and electronic vibes that scratch at your nerves alongside that rapid ticking sound. This one is all about two emcees bouncing off each other with the kind of bars that would not be out of place on any stage.

The album is rounded off with Danny’s Outro. Where Danny Riggs just gives us a quick personal message. He also touches on the appearance on Angelface, perhaps hinting at the fact we have not heard the last of that name…

 

Overall, I found Better Late Than Never to be a highly enjoyable listen and one which was surprisingly easy to write to, which is something that I noted when reviewing the Times Change EP too. I think this comes down to the fact of how Danny writes his lyrics. He is very down to earth and does not write in a way that makes what he says too complex in the wordplay. That does not make his lyricism too basic either. It says that he has taken time to write an album that says what he wants it to say, in a way that anyone can understand. It is still cleaver in its construction and delivered in a way that shows he is constantly leaning and developing his craft. I can see that the future for Danny will show him to keep developing and honing his craft, and with a lot more to give to the UK scene as he works towards his dreams. There is also that little view of his alter ego, Angelface, who could serve Danny Well and give him another avenue to express his craft in a slightly different way.

 When I heard the first track, it took me buy surprise a little. I am not a huge fan of trap style music and especially the high paced ticking sound, for me that takes the focus from the vocals and overshadows the track somewhat. However, that said, it is good to mix things up a bit and the album is book ended by those two tracks that have a vastly different sound from the rest of the album. Better Late Than Never is predominantly an album rooted in boom bap Hip Hop, but using those elements of trap and grime, show that Danny is prepared to step outside the box and into other genre’s, and there is nothing wrong in spreading your wings and showing that you have what it takes to be a cross genre artist.

The production on this one is all top notch and gives Danny the perfect platform to bring his long-awaited album into the limelight. I was not familiar with many of these producers prior to the album but, have to say that following this review, I am really impressed with what I have heard from all involved and will be looking out for them in the future.

It was also refreshing to see Danny taking the forefront on this album and filling it with too many features. Those that do feature fit perfectly on the album and do not take anything away from or overshadow Danny in any way; and only serve to compliment him on the album.

For me, as a debut album, this one ticks so many boxes. Danny has taken the time to deliver an album that perfectly showcases him as an emcee and also gives us a glimpse at his production. It shows that he has a lot more to give us as time goes on. It also shows us he has many strings to his bow and has many avenues to explore, especially where Angelface is concerned and in production too.

Better Late Than Never is out today. So, give it a listen and see what you think.

EP Review: Unapologetically Myself by Niques

I first featured Welsh multi-genre artist Niques, back in April of 2024 with her single Mate (check the review for more on Niques). Now she is back with her Debut EP Unapologetically Myself, which was originally release back at the end of November 2025.

The EP focuses on some of the challenges that Niques has faced in her life, which is likely to give this one a deep and personal edge. The production comes from Lupole, Beats By The Boy, DJ Zippy and is noted as having a more R&B vibe.

Let’s get straight into the EP which is six tracks and kicks off with Crazy. This one is produced by Lupole and has pulsing beat with electronic sounds and vocal samples with give this one a sound that you can’t help but, nod your head too as you listen. There is a definite uplifting vibe around this one, something which comes from this being an introduction, if you like, to what Niques has had to deal with in her life. It looks at a life dealing with CRPS (Complex regional Pain Syndrome), an illness with no cure and originates in her having to have a club foot fully reconstructed at the age of only six months old. What you get the feel for here is that someone who has spent their whole life dealing with chronic pain, builds a certain strength which comes from that. This is something that few can truly understand unless you have lived it yourself, something that, I guess you could say is the true definition of not judging on appearances alone, because you don’t truly know that person’s story. There is a power in this track, in the lyrics that gives you that understanding, to a point, if you chose to stop and really listen.

We now move on to Filtered Image, Again produced by Lupole, this has one has a heavy sound that brings keys to the forefront that brings a deep sound that seems to touch you deeply inside as you listen. That deep sound is elevated by the pure emotion which comes through as you listen to the lyrics. What is clear is that this one may mean something different to each one of us that listen but, here Niques speaks on the struggles faced growing up. There is much here about trust issues and presenting yourself to world with a mask on, something that doesn’t show who you truly are, it protects you from getting hurt or giving away too much of your true self but, that mask can present its own challenges, both to yourself and those around you. The title says a lot to as you consider how so many chose to present a filtered image of themselves through social media, forgetting that their true self is their authentic self. It might seem hard to present that to the world but, keeping that mask on is a lot harder that simply taking it off.

Lupole produces So Wild and this time brings us a sound that has a heavy sound but, there are a wealth of sounds over this which bring a more upbeat sound, one that also tweaks at your nerves a little, keeping your focus honed on what you are hearing. As you listen to this one there seems to be a juxtaposition between the title and the sound, as the title and sound seem at odds with each other. Getting into the lyrics is where everything becomes clearer, there seems to be a focus on mental health here. The person that everyone sees on the outside, is not always who that person is on the inside, especially when you have the kept the mask on for so long, and it begins to slip. These can be some of the darkest times in your life but, when you finally come through it and see the light on the other side, your true self comes out and look back on where you have been and where you are going and new, different version of wild you can come forth and help left you up to the place where you truly see yourself.

Baby Steps is produced by Beats By The Boy and brings a more chilled sound, there is still a deep bass sound but, the keys and other percussion bring this sound that seems to soften the edge and makes you open to feel more. That emotive edge brings more impact as you listen and understand that once you come out the other side of all the darkness and the hard times, it takes those little steps forwards that define your recovery. The more time you take to walk slowly forward with help you get far stronger that trying too hard by taking leaps forward. It takes help too, something you should never be afraid to ask for as you take those tentative steps to a new you, a more authentic you.

Don’t Do Me Wrong is produced by DJ Zippy, with some additional production from Lupole. This one has a more soulful edge to it with the beat being more chilled and with synths that bring the atmospheric vibe to the track. You get the feeling that this one is a powerful statement of the just how complex love can be, especially when entering into a new relationship. This is something most of us can easily relate to, in a number of ways, either because we have experienced it ourselves or seen others, close to us, go through similar situations. The track comes from the viewpoint of a woman looking at a new relationship and issues of trust and, ultimately, commitment, that come with something new. But there is also the chorus that hits a nerve as it shows the struggle of someone struggling to be fully open and commit, due to past hurt and broken trust. Anyone who has been in this situation, on either side, will know the emotions that come with this and it is likely to hit you hard if you’re not expecting it.

The EP ends with the Outerlude / Philosophy, once more produced by Lupole, bringing us a more stripped down sound that is heavy on synths and keys, before the beat kicks in with a little more strength. This soulful sound, with its stripped down vibe, brings far more focus to the vocals, while still giving you enough to move your body to. This is one of those tracks that you can draw different things from, depending on how you feel at the time. That philosophy of honesty is one of the things that speaks so deeply as you listen. Honesty in any part of a relationship with anyone is something that shows your true character. There is a depth to this track that puts you in mind of being in a place where two people are being most intimate, perhaps just lying together and being at one, these are the times when some of your strongest and most heartfelt things can be said and being honest means that never a truer words can be said.

 

One thing is perfectly clear here from the start of this EP, and that is the fact that when an artist is being so open and honest in presenting their own personal story, it opens the listener up to connecting and feeling the emotive content by way of their own emotive feelings, through shared lived experiences, and that is what makes this EP what it is, an open and honest portrayal of lived experiences that allows the listener to associate with, and feel the nature of what is being expressed through the music. Music is capable of so much and Unapologetically Myself expresses that perfectly.

Niques shows that she has true talent that spans not just R&B, soul or Rap, she is capable of cross genre expression that will not keep her focused in just one arena of music. Here she uses both rap and sung elements to fully express the true emotion of what she has experienced through life. At times her expression has a raw depth when a specific point is needed to be shown, while at other times her flow and vocals bring an expression of her soul that could so easily calm the savage beast. She has such a fantastic range that you feel there is nothing she could not excel at, should she choose to focus her talents on that direction. She has everything that makes her excel as an independent artist in her own right but, she also has the strength to blow up too, should she decide to go in that direction. It is the strength gained from a life built on pushing past hurdle after hurdle that has given her such strength of character and expression.

Let us not forget that the production pays a huge part in helping to deliver the emotions that are contained in any vocals, and here Lupole, Zippy and Beats By The Boy do a standout job of bringing sounds that carry and equal amount of the deep emotive edge, as do the vocals. They deliver vibes and sounds that keep you moving and enjoying every beat, while bringing you deeply touching music that you can enjoy as much as can feel.

As Niques debut EP, Unapologetically Myself is a belter that delivers a solid performance all-round, getting you out your seat and getting in touch with the true essence of who you are inside. This is one you can listen to on your own but wouldn’t be out of place in a party or club setting too.

Album Review: Vincent//Deconstructed by Uncle Mic Nitro

It was way back in 2021 when I kicked off that year’s reviews with the original Vincent On Horseback from the talented emcee Uncle Mic Nitro, who just happens to hail from my home city of Southampton, here in the UK. I never thought then that the best part of five years later would see me reviewing a remixed version of the album Vincent//Deconstructed.

Well, this is not strictly a remixed version of the original album as the original has been deconstructed and then six of the original tracks heave been remixed, alongside two brand new tracks and, if you grab the digital, there is also a remix of one of those new tracks as well.

Alongside the changes with this album, which is being released through Empty Hand Records, a hot new label located on Australia’s Gold Coast run by Speaks, and whose debut release was Highrize Jamz by Speaks himself (One I don’t currently have sadly), the tracks remixed from the original still feature the likes of Greg Blackman, Joe Burn, Ced Gee (Ultramagnetic MCs), Ramson Badbonez, Micall Parknsun, and Klashnekoff. There are cuts from DJ Tones, Jabbathakut, Krash Slaughta and Outbreak, with production coming from Speaks, Djar One, Krash Slaughta, Ollie Cheebo, Ollie Knight (who also handles mixing and mastering), the legendary DJ Supreme (Hijack), and Uncle Mic Nitro himself. It is all rounded off, once more, with artwork from the one and only John Dyer.

With all that said, let’s not hang around and just dive straight in…

 

First up is Write, which features Greg Blackman and is here in the form of the Speaks Remix. Here the sound is an infectious upbeat vibe, with a soulful edge which is extenuated by Greg’s vocals, that makes you want to move every ounce of your body. The message within this one is still the same as the original, with its reflective edge, looking back on life and the many moments that ignite the passion within UMN to put pen to paper, because the time is right to just write. The deeply personal edge to this one means that, even while you are enjoying the music, you can still relate to every word, something that may well ignite your own personal passion to do something to express that. Such an upbeat start to the album seems to wipe the slate clean of any expectations, and you don’t have to wait more than a second or two before UMN keeps it going with Snap Your Neck (Speaks Remix). This time Speaks gives us pounding beat that is backed by synth vibes giving this that kind of heavy bounce and pound the air vibe. DJ Tones brings the doubled-barrelled cuts with Joe Burn joining UMN on the mic. This one is a blistering display of vocal ferocity, one that hits you with such force that it threatens to snap your neck while you are bouncing and enjoying every second. Before you can take a breath and recover its time for Bod Gets Slapped Up (Djar One Remix) featuring Ced Gee and Ramson Badbonez. Flowing the Ced Gee intro, Djar One gives us a heavy rock guitar infused sound that is sure to see Bod get pounded rather than slapped. Our three emcees take turns to deliver the type of lyrical devastation that comes when you unleash this calibre of emcees. This one takes bod slapping to a whole new level hitting your ears with the kind of wordplay and delivery that has your adrenaline levels soaring, and every verbal hit that is delivered is matched by the razor sharp delivery from Djar One, who is also on the cut here.

As you try to recover from that onslaught, Speaks returns with the Fuck You (Speaks Remix) which also features cuts from Outbreak. Keeping that Coming to America sample, Speaks brings a solid boom bap sound with a funk fuelled edge from the guitars and keys, making sure to keep the adrenaline levels amped up. The original had this almost Hip Hop opera vibe to it, and while this one retains and echo of that, the sound brings a far rawer edge. UMN delivers his own homage to Hip Hop and being a rapper. That line ‘Two Turntables and a Mic’s like all I Need’ seems to say it all with that rapper’s braggadocio mixed in with explicit wordplay gives you all you need to know right here. As you pick yourself up off the floor, its time to get transported to a whole to world for the New Planet Goons (DJ Supreme Remix), featuring Micall Parknsun, Klashnekoff and Jabbathakut, this one brings a heavy beat with bass and some jazzy elements that all merge together at the hands of DJ Supreme to bring a sound that vibrates through your whole body, separating you soul from your earthly being. You drift off as the vocals take you off to the etheric realms where memories, thoughts and dreams all fuse together making you wonder exactly where you are but, you just allow yourself to go with it, flow with it, because this is a far better place to be than the three dimensional world you just left. You come back from this waking dream to the first of the brand new tracks from Uncle Mic Nitro. Heavy Tusk (Krash Slaughta Original Mix) brings a solid and heavy banging sound that has vibe that draws you in, uncapping the levels of adrenaline you can experience, getting you back up and bouncing with reckless abandon. UMN delivers another devastating display  of his lyrical dexterity. This one has a battle rap edge to it too as it hits you with blistering pace and some heavy nature infused wordplay that leaves you impaled by a ton of ivory.

We finally reach the last of our remixes from the original album with Keep Drinking (Eyes Like Dolls Remix) which has a heavy house vibe to it, giving you the kind of sound that you can really see being a proper club sound that gets everyone moving. Here UMN unleashes a no holes barred look at the effects of the use of alcohol and illicit substances to shut out the darkness and bring some level of momentary enjoyment to a tough life. The sound here completely changes my view of this track from the original. There are elements that reflect from that initial interpretation, but here we see how so many use substances, in many forms, to escape what life brings but, ultimately reality catches up with you. Up next, if you have the physical version of the album, is final album track and the second of the new tracks. Cake or Death (Cheebo Original Mix) sees Ollie Cheebo give us a sound that has a heavy pounding beat with this eerie backdrop of strings and keys that gives this one a dark edge, making you want to listen and understand what this one is all about. UMN weaponizes the mic here as he mixes battle rap and rap braggadocio into a raw and explosive display of wordplay, flows and lyricism that shows just how good of an emcee he is. This is one to enjoy and punch the air too as the shear level of vocal mastery is a pleasure to behold. Now, just to round things off, with the digital version of the album comes the Cake or Death (Nappa Remix) what this one does is take a number of instantly recognisable samples, mix them up and give us an upbeat sound that completely changes the air of the track. This remix takes the heavy battle rap edge and flips it to this upbeat sound that has you nodding your head, grinning from ear to ear as you bounce around having a great time just enjoying every line…

 

After listening to this album, top to bottom, there are two things that become clear to the listener, well, if you choose to listen intently, and if you know the original Vincent album…

Firstly, The album is a rock solid display of just how much of a talented emcee Uncle Mic Nitro truly is. As I noted with the original Vincent review, UMN is one of those UK emcee’s who has cemented his place within the scene and possesses a lyrical prowess that is second to very few on the scene. What is also apparent here is that he does not try and saturate to scene with releases that push who he is, settling for quality over quantity, which is something for me that works so well. There is no need to drop release after release to prove your expertise, when a release or two per year, or in UMN’s case, every few years, can demonstrate how good you are, if gives a lot more anticipation of the quality than when you release something every month. Uncle Mic Nitro is definitely one of those emcees who has the quality of wordplay and delivery that puts a rubber stamp on all they do.

The second thing that is immediately apparent here is that remixing tracks can so often revitalise and almost reinvent them. We see here how those tracks from the original that have been remixed for the project, have their vibes changed quite vividly, allowing the listener to listen again, gaining further insights into each. We also see just how much vibes can be changed when you look at the original and the remix of Cake or Death.

Giving us two brand new tracks also adds a little extra to the album, giving you something new to look forward to for the maestro on the mic, UMN. This breaths new life into Vincent and gives him a new world to explore, therefore giving his listeners new music to enjoy along the way. All the production fits so well with the vocals and those cracking feature verses, that it leaves us nothing, we can’t enjoy.

Everything here is top notch. The producers bring old tracks into the present with some solid reinterpretations that give us a new look, and a new wat enjoy these tracks. The new tracks add another dimension to things, giving us something new to enjoy and leaving us with an air of anticipation that perhaps Uncle Mic Nitro is not done yet.  

This is a cracking second release for the fledgeling label Empty Hand Records, and one that shows that they are well on the way to making themselves a force in releasing good music, regardless of whether it is Hip Hop or another genre entirely.

 

Vincent//Deconstructed, due some delays, is released on 18th January 2026 with some limited vinyl copies available, so don’t sleep on these, Pre-Orders are now live.

EP Review: Times Change by Danny Riggs Prod. By Pandamonium

Somewhere back in the mists of time, my good friend and DJ / Producer / Emcee and all-round good egg Pandamonium put out an offer to fully produce an album, EP or whatever for a proper bargain price, and one of the projects that grew from that was a collaboration with upcoming rapper / Singer / Songwriter and drummer from Nottingham UK, Danny Riggs.

That collaboration is now available for everyone to check out and is titled Times Change. Now, aside from being fully produced by Pandamonium, it features some pretty heavy hitters as well including Louis Cypher and Zar! Plus, there is a posse style cut that features a host of emcees in the form of Louis Cypher, Aquatic Ape, C Hayez, Tippyvshummanity, Odox, Cali Green and the legend that is Cappo. With a line-up like that, it is hard to write anymore, so I’m just gonna get into it…

 

Times Change clocks in at a sneeze under forty minutes long across ten tracks and kicks off with Intro_spective, which has Pandamonium's trademark jazzy vibe but, with a more laid-back sound of horns, guitar, and cymbals. The focus of this intro is an invitation for all of us to look within to make the greatest changes. Keeping our focus on what is outside of us and on what others are doing will never be transformative, only a quick fix…

With that thought firmly rooted into our awareness, the album in earnest with Loading In, keeping it laid back here, there is that nice little addition of that 80’s digital computer loading sound, the drumbeat is proper Hip Hop here and backed by bass, kays and horns, which keeps that jazz-hop vibe going. Here we find Danny bringing us the lowdown on who he is and the things that inspire him to do what he does behind the Mic. It is refreshing to get that insight because, with Danny being one of the younger generation of rappers out there, it gives us this deep look at what drives him and that there is this desire within him to see people inviting love into their lives to bring more of it into the world. From that personal note, its time to get more head nod with No Breaks. Pandamonium gives us a nice beat and handclaps to get out heads moving and there are more samples thrown in with quick turns of pace that keep us on our toes. Here we find Danny taking us through some of those moments in life where we feel we just can’t catch a break. He delivers this with some great comedic lines that will have you grinning for sure. You can keep that grin on your face as Playing Games opens with that Nintendo Wii electronic little tune, as a father and son get ready to play on the console. Panda then spins that tune with a nice little head nod beat to give Danny the perfect background to reminisce on his younger days, name dropping a plethora of video games, TV shows and more from the 2000’s. I bet us older heads will recognise most of these as we watched em with our kids too.

Real Business takes us back to that laid-back jazzy vibe of piano and other keys over another nice drumbeat getting us almost swaying back and forth. Danny, drawing on his personal experience, takes us on a trip that is all about doing what you love and constantly aiming to reach your goals. It’s a long journey where some will doubt you and criticize you but, use that energy to fuel your passion for what you do and keep walking forward no matter what. It’s now time for a brief Technical Interlude with serves to introduce what’s about to happen in the second part of the album. Very tongue-in-cheek this one and Panda’s beat has this very lift or elevator music about it but, before you know it, we’re all good and its time to move on to Haters which see’s Louis Cypher making his first appearance. This one turns up the energy levels more than a few notches with a cracking sound that mixes horns, keys and more with a nice infectious beat. This one has the air of battle rap about it as Danny and Louis give us a solid display of wordplay, spinning line after line that will make anyone think twice about stepping up on them…

Almost Blind sees Zar! Step up alongside Danny, with Panda providing a more chilled beat with this electronic sample that gives this one a nerve tweaking edge but, not in bad way, as it just anchors your focus on the words. As you listen to this one it really has a message that echoes the introduction, where its all about having faith in yourself, never giving up, and letting love guide you to a better place. With those sentiments still ringing in your ears, the penultimate track here seems to show what is possible if you don’t give up but, aim for your goals. Legacy is a track that weighs in at nearly ten minutes in length and sees Danny joined by Louis Cypher, Aquatic Ape, C Hayez, Tippyvshummanity, Odox, Cali Green and Cappo. Panda drops a deep funky vibe on this one with deep beat, bass and this funked out guitar that really gets you moving. Less of a hardcore posse cut that you might expect, this one is more a collective of emcees speaking on just what it means to them to leave a legacy behind them. The core thing here is not leaving money or material things but, leaving a legacy of words that have true meaning; creating something that will speak to people for years to come, and the length seems to float by as you listen intently. This is a deep and thought-provoking track that you can’t help but take something from. The album ends with The Best Is Yet To Come Outro which sees Panda on form with a nice head nod little track with bass, guitars and cuts, rounding off the album and suggesting to all that this is just the beginning of the journey for Danny Riggs and the best, well that’s to come and we’ll just have to wait and see what that brings…

 

Overall, what can I say about this one? Well, one thing I can say is that it was a pleasure to wrote to, as the sound and lyrics just made the listening and writing something that flowed with ease; and I love it when that happens because it makes my job easier.

As this was my introduction to Danny Riggs, I was pleasantly surprised to hear someone who has a passion and confidence in his craft. He has some great wordplay and turns of flow while delivering everything with an air that says he is more than able to make a name for himself on the UK scene, and there is no reason to believe that he will not still be here doing his thing for years to come. It will be interesting to watch how he progresses and matures as his journey continues. He is definitely one to watch.

It was also interesting to see how the album had this distinct feel of two halves, separated by this little comedic ditty. The first half showed what Danny can do flying solo, while the second half gave him the chance to drop verses alongside some big name features too. It really showed that he has the capability to hold his own, regardless of if he does it solo or alongside other artists.

He did a great job picking Pandamonium to work with on this project as it does seem to show that he fits really well with Panda’s production style. Each beat panda provided worked so well with the essence of what Danny was going for. Mixing up the styles and the pace gave Danny some good platforms to show how he too can mix things up. Now, I didn’t mention much about the cuts in the write-up for each track, and Panda does not drop a lot of them but, when he does, they are used in just the right places and form to bring that full on Hip Hop vibe to proceedings.

The features artists on the second half of the album all fit so well into the vibe of what Danny is giving us here. He gives us names that we know very well, alongside some that we might not know so well but, it all works perfectly and adds that icing to the cake.

All-in-All, Times Change is an impressive release by one of the UK’s up and coming rap artists who delivers the kind of message that says fairly and squarely, I’m here and I’m one to watch. Plus, as us old heads know, times do change and here we have someone who looks to fit so well within the UK Hip Hop scene, drawing on the essence of that real Hip Hop sound.

EP Review: Kemz The Alchemist by Kemetstry

Kemz The Alchemist is the latest EP from Yorkshire based emcee Kemetstry, who has previously featured on the blog with his single Astral Plane and the Kemez The Atlantean EP. Kemz always brings a mix of musical vibes and deep lyrics that bring together personal experiences and a wealth of knowledge of ancient civilisations, particularly pre-egyptian, and spiritual essence.

Kemz The Alchemist is nine tracks deep, which is the kind of track number that many albums now have, featuring eight tracks and one remix and there is also some heavy weight production and features along the way to look out for. So, lets no mess about and get straight into this one…

The EP kicks of with Dickhead, produced by Illinformed it has this heavy drum beat over xylophone notes and keys to bring you vibe that has you sitting on the fence between this realm and the next. Here we find Kemz drawing on his own experiences to bring a stark focus the kind of people who talk and act like they know everything but in reality, have no real understanding of anything around them. Kemz pulls no punches here and is quite blunt in what he says but then sometimes it just needs to be that way. Next up is Too Bad Mind, which is produced by Jack Danz who brings us a grime vibe, mixing drums and heavy bass vibes with some eerie keys and strings. This short track gives just enough airtime to those who give out negative vibes around us. This is kind of energy that, if we give it enough attention, will bring us down and stop us from achieving our goals. The world is full of negative aspects and with the first couple of tracks bringing that into our awareness, its time to switch things up with Anubis (5 Star Generals) Posse Cut. This one is produced by Krimson and features Flowtecs, Jibbarish, Kg Chi and Menace Mendoza, alongside Kemz. The beat plods along with just enough pace and these nerve shredding keys, to keep you focused. This allows the lyrics to take over and take over your mind as each of these emcees produce the kind of lyrical wordplay that captivates you, while unconsciously laying seeds in your mind that will have you questioning the impact of this one across your entire timeline… 

Fuck Boy is produced by Alchemy and brings a more chilled vibe to the album with drums and keys. Is full of street stories that, at first thought, might make you think this is all about being derogatory to women? However, after a few listens you begin to realise that a story about man who has been treated poorly, in the past, by women and who now treats them poorly as a result. This is not something I might personally agree with but, the point here is that when people are treated bad, they will often become what they most hate and therefore continue the cycle and people continue to be hurt and abused. The message is to recognise the cycle and to break it, becoming the better person. After such intense thoughts there needs to be a change and Spirit Vs Ego, produced by Krimson, brings a more laid-back vibe of drums and keys that promises that change. Kemz looks at the difference between what comes from the Ego and what comes from the Spirit; this is very much an internal struggle where it is so easy to let the ego win out and take over as it is usually the easiest route but, the spirit will bring the most positive and fulfilling rewards, maybe not the easiest path to tread as it takes dedication but, it will make you the better version of your true self. This brings what is almost a revelation, as Kemz helps us to see past the ego and focus on the spirit, which leaves us open to the Light Beings (Five D). With production from Alkemy, it also features Kilo, the drums and organ notes bring a more uplifting sound that puts you in touch with your third eye. This one is all about looking beyond the 3-D world and recognizing we are light beings experiencing the 3-D world but, when you look beyond the world around you and becoming more in touch with your true self, you realise you are a light being on a whole new vibrational frequency, and that realisation opens you up to a whole new way of being and understanding. It’s definitely something to think about…

We move into the final third of the EP and the penultimate original track, Connect With Ya Soul features Verbz and is produced by CLXCKWRK. The sound brings more xylophone notes alongside horns and bass, over a chilled drumbeat, this brings the kind of sound that gets your head moving but, also keeps your mind open. The message in this one follows perfectly from Light Beings as its all about looking deep within yourself to get in touch with your true self, the very soul of who you are. If you can get to this point it will allow you to keep you focus on your goals and to bring those goals to you but, it can only be achieved by facing your shadow side and then allowing you to truly see the light. The last of the original tracks is Consequences which is produced by the legendary Farma G who brings this deep sound mixing strings and guitars over this head nod beat, the result is a vibe that makes your entire body tingle. Kemz speaks on how all our choices have consequences and so it is important to make the right choices in all we do. Sometimes the right choice brings the biggest lessons to us, this happens in order to help us make the right decisions further down lifes path. It really is than simple, you just have to have an awareness, an intuition that will help you make those right choices. The final track of the EP is Dickhead (dnb Remix). Now, I have already given you my take on what this track is all about but, what does this remix bring to the track? Produced by Ziggy Ostas the sound has a far more sonic sound and ramps up the energy levels. There is also a remix on the vocals too with Kemz verses having a slightly different focus here, being a little grittier and looking more at street violent and how this affects us, among other things.

 

Once more Kemetstry brings us an EP that mixes the darker aspects of life with a more spiritual side that promises to lead us away from the negativity and darkness and back into a more positive and lighter path. There are references to Kemet, this was the ancient name of the land which would become Egypt and Kemetism is an ancient neopagan religion that follows those ancient beliefs. It is no wonder that these references feature so vividly as Kemet forms part of his name. This brings a whole new viewpoint to how we see the world around us and the spiritual aspect of our deeper development.

Kemz The Alchemist does not force you to take on a new belief system but, simply invites us to view the world and life around us through new eyes. What is also interesting to note, that much of what Kemetstry notes from this new viewpoint is that much of what he opens us up to is not just limited to Kemetism but, is something that is apparent in many different belief systems, and the fact that these messages keep coming to us, regardless of our beliefs, must make us sit up and take note…

So, whether you chose to think of the deeper aspects of the EP or not Kemz The Alchemist is a highly enjoyable listen and one that encompasses different musical tastes with intelligent lyrical content that is delivered in a way that shows that Kemetstry is one of the UK’s most insightful underground rap artists.

This one is well worth checking out and might well give you something to think about in the process.

Album Review: Mirtazapine Dreams by Dotz & DJ Goblin

It was in 2016 that I first got my taste of Dotz with the release of his Bring The Soul Back EP which featured Blak Twang, Tony D, Wordshiff Flip, Blizzard, Skrabl, Peterz and Jabbathakut, which I managed to grab a signed copy of at the time. But he has been active on the UK scene since 2012, releasing a number of solo and group projects which includes the Phili’N’Dotz album alongside Si Phili of Phi Life Cypher. Alongside tours of the UK and Europe and collabs with the likes of Chester P and Klashnekoff, he is also a seasoned veteran of rap battles and a freestyle champion.

Following a few years away from the scene, Dotz returned at the end of 2022 releasing a string of singles and two solo albums. Mirtazapine Dream is his second release of 2024.

There are a couple of versions of this album and the one I’ll be reviewing here is the Deluxe Edition, this has an extra six tracks over the standard version which give you all the tracks originally recorded for the album. The concept behind the album is that one of the side effects of the drug Mirtazapine is that it can give you very vivid and intense dark dreams; it was through his own personal experience of this that Dotz got the idea for album, that and the beats provided by Goblin which also served to further reflect the vibe of those dreams.

Now you have some idea of what to expect, let me walk you through the album from top to bottom…

It all begins with Information For The User where percussion, keys and xylophone notes come together to create this sense of being in a half awake and drowsy mind state. As you are carried along on this mind-numbing ride you are treated to the information about the drug Mirtazapine, its uses and side effects but, the vocals are also given this twisted sound that matches that drowsy, drug induced state of mind. We join our protagonist staring at The Ceiling, as the drug begins to take a hold on his reality. The beat is heavy but doesn’t have blistering pace, while the ticking cymbals tweak your nerves and everything else seems to lose cohesion as does the mind. There is no sugar coating the facts here as the daydreams haunt his every waking moment and he seeks to separate himself from the world around, where possible, as he clings to every aspect of the real world. The beat switches up bringing a straight up banger on Charlie Sheen. The xylophone and guitar notes add an extra edge which seems to bring a moment of clarity from the haze of the drug. Here find Dotz going all in and pulling no punches as he details the struggles with drugs and getting clean, just like the actor Charlie Sheen.

A pounding beat and eerie background notes that seems to include wooden xylophone, once more grabs your awareness and twists it for the Twelve Steps. This one continues the struggles of going through rehab and the realisations that come with that as you look back at your past and the person you once were, and now struggle to keep from your door. Ten Four hits with another heavy drumbeat, pounding your awareness while background vocal samples and percussion begin to stretch your understanding of reality. Here we take a look at the protagonist from the outside as he tries to claw his way back from the brink, all the while he wonders if his calls for help are falling on deaf ears, as he wonders if it is all really worth it. Everything in Sight hits with a heavy sound of drums, keys, vocal samples and more, making you feel like your brain is about to explode from your skull. As the world around him closes in the protagonist relapses in extreme style, seeking to burn down all that is around him as he tries to shut out the noise.

Guitars and proper heavy beat combine to raise your adrenaline levels on Red Rooms. This one takes you deep into the murky world of the dark web. Here we find ourselves immersed in a places where anything that is illegal takes place as the norm, where anything can be brought or sold and nothing is off the table. The pounding drums fall slightly to the back as heavy eerie piano vibes take the forefront. This brings the kinda sound that has you looking over your shoulder, constantly with Haunted. Here we find the protagonist struggling with all he has done, haunted by the ghosts of those he has crossed paths with and the situations he has found himself in but, can he truly trust all that he sees and feels? Souvenirs brings another look from the outside in with a sound that is a mix of drums, keys and bass vibes with little accents that tease your mind. Here we follow a serial killer, his acts and the souvenirs he gathers as a result. Is this person out protagonist or is this just another disturbing dream?

The Dark Passenger (Interlude) brings us a short musing over an electronic sounding vibe that carries us along as we listen to the words through what appears to be a drug fuelled haze. Those words seem to have a deep impact as you feel for him and wonder just where this is heading. But those thoughts are blasted from your mind as the pounding drums, keys and strings of Raise Your Guns burst forth. This is a no holds barred look at what is going on around the world as wars ravage the innocent as those in a place a power seeks to stir up hatred and take land from others. Land they say is theirs, when in truth, it belongs to no one, and one day the innocent will raise up and say no more. Walk The Plank is the first track to feature DJ TMB on the cut and brings us a solid beat that is joined by these sounds that twist your mind this way and that. Our protagonist’s mind is seemingly spinning out of control as his grip on reality appears to further slip away but, as we already know, the drug creates these strange dreams and this is just one of them, right?

I Don’t Wanna Talk About It brings more nerve-jangling electronic elements to proceedings over the drumbeat. This gives you the vibe that something is being help back, almost like there is this uncomfortable feeling about certain things. As you listen you get the feeling this is another moment of clarity, to a point but, here there is a realisation of not being comfortable in his own body, and with that comes a desire to not open up and not be completely honest because it’s too painful. The beat hits hard on When It Rains It Pours, with guitar vibes, this one has a more thoughtful or reflective edge to it. Here you get the sense that the clarity continues as Dotz muses over recovery and building up all that the hard time tore down, while recognising that there is still a voice that craves the solace of the drugs but, here and now the strength to rebuild is stronger. DJ TMB features once more on Otis Driftwood. The sound here has that proper drumbeat mixed with piano notes and other elements creating a sound that anchors you back in reality. Well, at least that’s how it seams at first. The track features elements from The Devils Rejects etc, where the character of Otis comes from, this gives the track takes us back to the disturbing dream aspect of mirtazapine once more as it interacts with the reality of life.

Nothin’ Here’s Free brings a more boom bap feel to the proceedings but still has an eerie electronic vibe to it too, making you wonder what reality you are currently in. This one is a gritty look at the fact that as we go through life, the one thing we can’t escape from is the fact that nothing is truly free, Beit our existence or our survival, the only time we will be truly free is in death. A sobering thought that stays will you until Subplots bursts into your ears, with its pounding beat, electronic elements and DJ TMB’s razor sharp cuts. as you nod your head to this Dotz assaults your ears with the realisation that everything is not what it seems? Just when you think you have nailed what this is all about there are more subplots to that you in another direction as he constantly keeps you guessing from line to line and bar to bar. Nerve jangling piano draws you in before the heavy beats drops for Screaming In My Sleep. This one is deeply personal expose of what this mirtazapine dreams can do as Dotz opens up on some of the things that he sees beyond the veil of sleep while his wife tells him that her reality is to hear him screaming in his sleep…

A pounding drum beat with double bass and a nerve tweaking electronic note repeating is the basis for Bon Nuit (French for Good Night). This sound makes you wonder what the connection is with a good night sleep. The more you listen, you realise that mirtazapine dreaming rarely gives a good night’s sleep. It’s almost like, saying those words elicits a fear response because you don’t know what the night will bring when you close your eyes. The pounding beat of Straight Down Hill is backed by more of these nerve and mind twisting elements that can’t help but, draw you through the track. This one is a no nonsense at the how the standard healthcare model is to use drugs to control and suppress the struggles that so many of us face day to day. It is worth more than investigating the root cause because big pharma makes those drugs a big investment for GP’s etc, where as counselling does not make money but drains it. So, it is easier to get you to pop another pill. We move into the penultimate track of the album with The Chase. The head nod drumbeat is flanked by bass and nervous keys which create this sound that gets your head nodding while systematically shredding your nerves, to a point. This one mixes the dark dreams with thoughts on his music, where you begin to wonder where the line is between the two. Here though, its all about the chase, whether it comes within the dream or back in reality, chasing your dreams and reaching the top. The final track of this mammoth Deluxe Edition is Mr Misfit and Dotz and DJ Goblin go out on a high with this upbeat sound that mixes a dope beat with piano elements and more creating an infectious sound you want more of. The upbeat nature of the sound appears to be in contrast to Dotz Lyrics which see his dreams trying to seep into real life like some nightmare on elm street type thing. Its all no punches pulled and in your face style but, remember its all just a mirtazapine dreaming story, right…

What becomes apparent after listening to this album is that this is one hell of a rollercoaster ride through a reality that encapsulates many strange and deeply disturbing experiences that seem to be uncontrollable once your eyes are shut. But also, there are times when that sense of a distorted reality drifts into the real world, which must be troubling, in itself. But what better way to express what that is like than by bringing those lived experiences into musical form, thus expressing the true nature of what it is like to experience Mirtazapine Dreams. I can imagine this being quite a cathartic thing to do, and something that must help release the troubling nature of experiencing these dreams night after night.

All that aside, one thing that Mirtazapine Dreams does do is to perfectly display the quality of what Dotz and DJ Goblin are capable of together. There are no guest artists on the album, except for DJ TMB on the cut, and no guest production either. This is simply one emcee and one producer doing their thing and doing it superbly well I might add.

Dotz brings his years of experience to bear on this one, and not just his years of musical experience either. He brings first hand knowledge of what it is to experience and live with this and this adds authenticity to the whole project. His wordplay is inventive and crafted in such a way as to keep everything flowing. His delivery on this one has a raw edge that is tinged, at times, with displays of a wide range of emotions, something you can only get when you have truly lived through something.

Alongside Dotz, DJ Goblin brings production that perfectly mirrors the essence of what it must be to experience these Mirtazapine Dreams. The sound is rooted in that Boom Bap Hip Hop sound but, there is this dark element that reflects the way dreams can be experienced what that does to that person on a physical and emotional level. I mean, what else do you need to say here.

Overall, this is an album that may not appeal to everyone due to its stark reality and the fact that there are only the briefest of glimpses at any kind of solace. But this is an album that is aimed at bringing a focus and shining a light on what it is to experience the side effects of a drug that is administered to combat the effects of such things as depression. Yes, this is an enjoyable album and one that you really need to listen to but, more than that this is a reality that many people experience on a daily basis as they try deal with their own mental health. I understand this as I spent many years on different anti-depressants with different levels of side effects. So, I commend Dotz for having the strength to use his own lived experience to bring this into the light.

It was way back in April last year that I featured Manchester MC, Cigarettes and Scratchcards with his single 1984. That review, see link below, included some bio on the man, so this time I’m just gonna take you straight into the review.

So, let’s go…

 

Now, the title of this one leaves little to the imagination and conjures up a lot of thoughts and images of what this one could be about but, before we go judging the title and what we might hear, lets just take a listen.

As the heavy guitar kicks in, it’s immediately that this one is not my usual Hip Hop sound, this one has a heavy punk sound that is courtesy of live instruments. The vibe is high energy and the sound mixed with Cig’s rapped vocals brings some interesting images to the mind, that will probably appeal to some of the older Hip Hop crowd who, like myself, grew up in the 70’s and 80’s where punk rock was still a huge scene.

So, what does Cig’s have to say one this one? The first thing that you realise is that this single is not focused on an individual but, just like the original punk records, this one is a look at our country and the society we live in. So, the ‘Her’ in the title is Britannia, Great Britain or how ever you chose to see it. This one is, as you might expect, a proper political statement, in parts, with shots taken at the government, the banks, and a lot more. The main message here is that, you might well love the country in which you live but, the way that it is run by those who the people have placed in the highest position of power, plays with that affection; you may have been born here and have so much love for the family and friends that surround you, feel so much connection with countryside and the ancient sites of historical significance however, the struggles placed upon you by government, the banking system, and the things outside of your control, really push you to the point where you question the balance of love for the country over the stress caused by the powers that be.

Overall, you might call this a fusion of Rap and Punk and it is one of those tracks that might appeal to one camp or the other but, there will be a number of listeners that will enjoy that crossover sound and understand exactly where Cig’s is coming from in delivering a message in this way, as it reaches out beyond the rap or punk fans. But the real test for you the listener, is to give this one a go, have a listen and feel what is being said and then decide if it is for you.

For me it was not my normal sound but, that vibe mixed with the strong statements within, really had me feeling this one. OK, so it might not be something I’ll have on repeat necessarily but, it is one of those that you can come back to when you need an escape from the norm or a bit of a rant at the establishment, something that is needed right now, if we’re honest right!

Single Review: Mic Check, Mic Check by Planky ft Dynamite MC and Harry Shotta

Back in April of last year I featured Planky with his single Rescue Me which featured 2^nd Generation Wu on vocals. So, it is a pleasure to once again feature the Hampshire based Beat Maker/Producer with his latest offering MIC CHECK, MIC CHECK featuring two huge UK rap artists in Dynamite MC and Harry Shotta, plus Andreas Millns on keys, which was released on 23^rd February.

Without further ado, let’s get into it…

Planky uses a mix of drums, guitar vibes and those live keys to create this instantly infectious sound that is upbeat, funky, and full of energy. Dynamite MC and Harry Shotta bounce off each other with slick, seamless flows and bars that show these two were the perfect choice for this track. MIC CHECK, MIC CHECK is really all about two MC’s demonstrating their lyrical prowess over dope Hip Hop beat, no more no less but, you know, sometimes you don’t need any more than that.

MIC CHECK, MIC CHECK is a solid, banger of a track that is sure to be one of those that is a certified floor filler in the clubs and one of those you gotta turn way up when it on the speakers, regardless of where you are.

Planky once more proves he is a standout producer on the UK Scene with a track that has its roots in that real Hip Hop sound, while keeping the sound fresh and packed with adrenaline for those who like to move, as well as those who like to groove. The added dimension of the live keys helps elevate this one for sure, I love hearing live instruments on a track, and he caps it all off by drafting in two UK powerhouse MCs to get you bouncing, and let’s be real here, Dynamite MC and Harry Shotta are off the hook on this one…

This might seem like a short one by my standards but, I don’t think I need to say anymore here, except may be that you just need to get online, grab a copy, and get that volume way up.
