Album Review: The Wreckage by Create-A-Mess

The Wreckage

By

Create-A-Mess

The Wreckage is the hot new album on AE Productions out of Bristol and is brought to us from Create-A-Mess, otherwise known as the UK’s own, Jonny Cuba (Dynamic Syncopation, Soundsci).

Jonny’s pedigree as a producer on the Hip Hop scene, knows almost no bounds and has seen him work with the likes of Mass Influence, Chill Rob G, Apathy, EV.ON, Juice Aleem, Phi Life Cypher and a great many more besides. He formed Soundsci in 2009 with Ollie Teeba (Herbaliser) and Audessey aka Jack Jones (Mass Influence), and over time the crew would expand and see Oxygen and U-George come onboard for the releases like Soundsational (Ubiquity Records) and My Boosey Weighs a Ton (Cavendish Library). Emcee Supastition would also join the crew for their final LP, Walk The Earth (Fresh Pressings).

It was following this final release from Soundsci that Jonny would go on to help his Soundsci crew mates U-George, Ollie Teeba and Jack Jones on their solo projects. As time went by it was only right that Jonny should release his own solo project, and under the moniker of Create-A-Mess he has done just that. Utilising his bold and intricate production style and wealth of unheard beats, breaks and samples; plus, a stunning line-up of Emcees that include, J Scienide, Eddie Meeks, Ghettosocks, Nilla, Emskee, Jesus Mason, and his Soundsci brothers: Jack Jones, U-George and Oxygen, with all cuts and sctratches coming from Ollie Teeba.

Now, with all that considered, there is only one thing left for me to do, and that is to get into this one…

This album is eight tracks deep and kicks off with Clues which features Jesus Mason and Emskee on vocal duties. This one gets your head nodding from the get-go as the drum beat mixes with bass and other elements to give you this sound that you don’t just enjoy as Hip Hop but, it does seem to have this almost hypnotic edge to it. Jesus and Emskee trade verses and provide a solid display of wordplay that, as you listen to the metaphors and more, give you some clue as to their pedigree on the mic. Next, it is the turn of J.Scienide and Eddie Meeks to step up to the mic for Denmark Hill. Here we find Create-A-Mess getting funky with a slick mix of bass, keys, and strings over a nice drum beat that continues that unconscious desire to move to the sound. As you listen to the vocals on this one, there are plenty of references to driving, motion and just the passing of everyday life, which does make you think of the title and how this all works? Denmark Hill is a place in Camberwell, London, and the lyrics really put in that place, watching the world go by or being part of that rat race. From being rooted very much in the now, we wonder what’s next as Planet People, with Oxygen and Emskee, could keep us rooted here or take us elsewhere?  The deep sound that has guitar vibes taking the forefront over the beat, brings a sound that takes us beyond the confines of the planet but, leaves us observing from above. Oxygen and Emskee skilfully spin vocals that conjure up visions in your head of the past and present of the human race, or should that be the human races? This one makes you think of the good and the bad humans have perpetrated across its existence as the planet people. As those thoughts float around your mind, Thaddius III sees Thaddius Brown (U-George) join us on our journey. This one takes the beat down a few notches in pace as the beat, bass, keys, and Maracas, create this sound that takes your awareness down deep, while keeping just enough of your mind in the now to oak up the vocals. Thaddeus Brown spins metaphors around in your mind taking you to places you never thought you’d go but, its all rooted in the streets. Is this just one persons experience or a conglomeration of many, you decide or maybe Thaddius has already told you, you just need to listen a bit more…

Now, if you are listening to this on a physical copy, this will be the moment you flip it over to the B-Side, and if you are listening on digital, well just keep on listening because Fly Humans is up next with Canadian emcee’s Ghettosocks and Nilla. This one bursts into you ears with cuts and the kind of beat and sound that immediately gets your head nodding and your adrenaline and energy levels rising, quickly. It’s good to have Ghettosocks and Nilla back as they take us off into dark parallel dimension where its hard to know if this is where monsters dwell, or if this is just a description of your own mind. What is apparent is that this is Hip Hop of the highest order ya feel. Its now time for Jack Jones to make his first appearance on Pull Ya Card. The Beat, bass, cuts, and sonic vibes on this give it this funky sound that takes you out the atmosphere. While you are bouncing to the sound Jack Jones schools you to the finer points of wordplay, showing you how it should be done by a true emcee. So, sit back and enjoy this one, because right now its not about where you are, its where its at, and this is where it’s at. As we move into the album’s penultimate track, Emskee returns for Listen Son! Where the beat is funky, the guitars are funky, and the cuts are razor sharp. This one keeps the motion in body and the needle to the groove. Emskee has this voice that just takes you back to the old skool, and here he uses it to great effect as the Hip Hop elder who is offering up pearls of wisdom to the younger generation of up-and-coming emcees. The album ends with Grammaticals, which features Jack Jones and Eddie Meeks on the mic. This one keeps that deep funk vibe with a deep drum sound, alongside horns and bass. It really helps you focus on the vocals here with a vibe that puts you in mind of sitting in a smoky speakeasy, relaxing as the sounds pound and the lyrics infiltrate your mind. Here its all about how the words flow with all the metaphors and similes merging and creating the grammaticals.

The first thing that strikes you about this album is just how much of a pleasure it is to listen to. From top to bottom, every track has that vibe that just makes you want to move to the music. Not only that, but when an album has this kind of vibe about it, it just makes the whole reviewing and writing process a pleasure to as everything you want to say seems to flow, just as the music and lyrics flow.

Now, I might not have written so much about this but, that’s the beauty of this one, it is one of those albums where I simply need to set-up the listening experience for you and the album does the rest. You might say that about most, if not all albums but, there are those times when more just works and the times when less is more, and this is the latter of those two.

Every beat that Create-A-Mess has produced here has that pure Hip Hop sound. Yeah, there are elements of our sounds that come in but, that has always been the beauty of Hip Hop, in that it can incorporate elements of many other genres of music and then make it its own sound. It is plain to see that Jonny Cuba draws on his years of experience to produce something that has to be one of the stand-out Hip Hop albums of the year so far. Every guest emcee here are on their A game, dropping some incredible verses that highlight just how much of an enjoyable experience it must have been to write and record to these beats.

This gives The Wreckage an overall vibe that is well crafted and polished, plus takes the bar for 2025 and sets it at a high level and invites anyone to do better. Now, it might not have been meant that way but, it simply is just that good.

There is a saying that says, ‘You can never get enough of a good thing’, and that applies to The Wreckage. Across the eight tracks, this one clocks in at a little under twenty minutes, a runtime that feels more like an EP. Having said that, it is the shear quality of this release that sticks out. All eight tracks come packed with the kind of Hip Hop that makes you feel every once of the pedigree that comes from Jonny’s experience on the scene, and the same can e said of all those guest emcees, as everything here flows with vibe that says everyone worked together in perfect harmony on this one.

I can honestly say that this one should be on turntables, tape machines and playlists for a good while to come. It is also worth pointing out that Jonny Cuba also provided the Photography on the project with the sleeve design coming from Mr Krum.

The Wreckage was released at the end of January this year on Limited Vinyl, Cassette and on Digital. So, if you have not already checked this one, then I suggest you do so now.

My humble thanks to J at ae Productions for giving me the chance to bring this one to you.

See ya next time,

Steve

Single Review: Shifty by King Dion

Shifty

By

King Dion

I first featured King Dion back in July this year with the Ed Koch EP alongside the Cut Beetlez. Now that EP went down pretty well so I’m interested to hear what the Atlanta rapper has for us on this follow-up single, Shifty which is produced by 3410 Sounds.

So, lets just get straight into it…

Shifty has this more modern sounding rap vibe from 3410 Sounds. The beat has this heavy, almost brooding sound to it which is broken up by the sharper sound of the programmed drums. This gives the whole track this vibe that has you almost on edge throughout. King Dion gives us solid flow that allows you to hear exactly what he is saying, which is always an advantage. The more you listen to this one, the more you get the feeling that this has an autobiographical feel to it. There is this feeling that King Dion is giving us a brief glimpse into life on the streets of Atlanta through the eyes of someone living it. You also feel that this is a bit of a statement, that King Dion is opening our eyes to where he is from and also where he is at.

Shifty is the kind of track that our friends across the pond will associate with a bit more than us here in the UK but, that is not to say that there are not some parallels between the two. The vibe of the track is sure to hit all the right notes for many and it is one of those that you should check out for yourself, just to see what notes it hits with you.

King Dion is definitely one of the upcoming rap artists to watch from the US. He also does not just restrict himself to the vocals but also dabbles in production and DJing too. For me though one of the things that stands out with King Dion is that his rap style has that flow that allows you to hear every rhyme, which is priceless, especially if you like to really get into what someone is putting across in their art.

Shifty is out on all the usual streaming platforms now.

My thanks to King Dion for dropping this one my way.

I’ll see ya next time.

Peace Out.

Steve.

EP Review: Summer Vibes EP by Can't Be Copied

Summer Vibes EP

By

Can’t Be Copied

It is always a pleasure to have these guys submit something to the blog and this will be the third release in a row that I have brought to you. Initially, I was not sure what to think when Mr Roka said that this one had a different vibe from the previous two albums that he has put out with partner KAO$ Da Rowdy MC. However, following an initial listen, I knew that this was one I had to really wrap my ears around.

So, grab yourself an ice-cold beverage or something similar and join me for the Summer Vibes EP…

It all kicks off with Mr Roka on a jazzy Hip Hop vibe of keys, alongside a solid drum beat, on Stay Fly. Here we find KAO$ taking us back to the 90’s and giving the lowdown on Hip Hop fashion and what it was to be Fly. It you are not familiar with the term Fly, it was all about looking your best, with best threads and freshest trainers, sneakers or kicks. KAO$ drops a ton of names here, which will take a lot of us back in the day, and there is not much more to say. Enjoy Life sees Mr Roka giving us a fresh beat with jazzy keys and Sax that puts you in mind of ATCQ and the like, as you nod ya head along. KAO$ gets busy on the track, giving us words that speak openly on enjoying what you have in life. It might take you a while and there will be challenges but, always do your best to enjoy every moment that you get the chance to, as it will help uplift your life. Energy levels ramp up a bit on Just Does, where Mr Roka gives us drums, horns and keys that he spins into the kinda feel good vibe that is highly infectious and gets you bouncing. KAO$ brings us wealth of lyrics that are infused with more feel-good vibes that are aimed at lifting you up, just because it feels so good.

Like Who has Mr Roka giving us a more bassy sound that is mixed with horns but, still keeps you moving. KAO$ brings that classic Hip Hop braggadocio air to things as he asks who can do it like he can. Emcees bigging themselves up has been a stapple of the Hip Hop sound for years and goes all the way back to the early days and beyond. An emcee had to prove they were worthy, by battling others and throwing down, showing that they had the skills. You don’t see so much of this these days but, it still happens but, more on the underground scene. Mr Roka continues to ramp up the bass vibes on Who Else, where he mixes a pounding beat with an electronic bass sound, which gets your head moving in a different way. KAOS brings us more of those uplifting words by showing that none of us are alone in what we are going through But, more importantly, you will never be alone once you take the stress away, and what better way to do that than by getting down to CBC. Before you know it, you’re already at the last track, wondering where the last quarter hour just went? But this last track has the Vibe Coming and that sees Mr Roka switching things to a more mellow grove. The chilled drumbeat is backed with keys, bass and more as you get the chance to kick back while still nodding your head along. KAO$ takes us on a reflective journey though his life, looking back at his life and family, the kind of experiences that shape you as you walk the path of life. It can be very therapeutic to look back as see how far you have come, it gives you a sense of purpose and makes you proud of the person you have become.

It really seems that CBC have this kind of Midas touch with what they do, and the Summer Vibes EP goes along way to proving that point. Now, it might not be full of those classic boom bap Hip Hop beats but, what it is jammed full of is a fresher, uplifting sound that is so perfect for the summer months and beyond, because this one will definitely help to bring light and warmth to those dark winter days.

Mr Roka’s production brings us this lighter more uplifting sound that mixes jazzy vibes with Hip Hop and more. It shows that he has the talent to mix it up a bit while still keeping his sound rooted in the classic Hip Hop sound. KAO$ Da Rowdy MC shows his prowess as an emcee as he brings us some classic lyricism, mixing up the wordplay and giving us tracks that have a solid entertainment level; still keeping us engaged with a mix of lived experience and classic rap vibes that keep you rocking while still being relatable.

This is definitely one of those releases where I don’t have to be so in-depth because the Summer Vibes EP is there to be enjoyed and sometimes, I can just as much by saying less. This one can be enjoyed anywhere but, it does give you the feeling of warm summer evenings and BBQs, whether that is sat at home, in the park or on the beach. Put the Summer Vibes EP on and let the good times roll.

My thanks to Mr Roka and KAO$ Da Rowdy MC for giving me the opportunity to do my stuff with this one.

The Summer Vibes EP is out now, so what you waiting for?

I’ll see ya next time,

Steve.

Album Review: Overview Effect by FR4NKIE

Overview Effect

By

FR4NKIE

Overview Effect is the latest release from Manchester, UK Grime artist FR4NKIE. This album is his sophomore release and will mark the first time I have reviewed a full album from the grime genre. The album includes features from underground artists including LPNoID, Illy From Da NW Side, Cosmo Laurie, Trapson, Dizmack, Masovelli, and Manchester Hypes. Production comes from Trolley Snatcha and promises to blend Road Rap and Grime influences with such elements as Folk and Guitar music as a backdrop to showcase FR4NKIE’s versatility.

Now before I get into the album it seems only right that I detail some background on FR4NKIE for you. The Manchester based artist was formerly know by the name XP Burstgang, and over the years he has achieved international recognition for his contributions to the Grime scene. Alongside collaborations with the likes of Mike Skinner and President T, his career has also seen victories in Lord of the Mics and Red Bull’s Grime-A-Side. Although his roots are in the Grime scene, he has also built a diverse discography that spans the likes of Trap, Drill, and some genre-defying ballads. This latest release draws on the experience gained throughout his career to bring a release that has a well-rounded and mature approach to street music.

So, with that said, let’s get into Overview Effect…

The album kicks off with To Be Frank, featuring LPNoID, the organ notes ease you into this one but, soon the heavy bass hits, ramping up the energy but, retaining those organ notes which bring an eerie and almost dark quality. This one see’s FR4NKIE taking us into the realities of street life in the UK, hence the dark tone of the track, because there are so many aspects of the street life in the UK cites that bring pain and violence, all in the name of making money. With those visions of the stark reality imprinted on your awareness, Brick In The Wall brings a sound that merges that street beat mixed with the folk guitar vibe that has a reflective edge to it. There is a touching element to this track which looks deeply at the struggles of living in a society that is set-up to keep most of us down. In our desire to be all we can be and to rebel against those who judge us, we often lose friends and loved ones along the way but, it is their memories that often keep us striving for more, rather than giving in and choosing to take that one step that will make us fall. Next up is Simon Says which features Illy from da NWside. Here the sound is back to that more classic grime sound with heavy bass, but with a mix of guitar and electronic vibes that tweak your nerves, just a little. The lyrics are delivered with more than a drop of venom and seem to be a demonstration of lyrical prowess of both artists. There is also a heavy dose of that street mentality and vibe here reflecting the reality of what many refuse to see.

Another Day In Britain keeps that grime vibe but, there are elements to the sound that really give this one a reflective air to it. It’s the kind of focused sound that helps you pay attention to what is being said, and here FR4NKIE has a lot to say; it’s a track that really mirrors the voice of so many of us these days. It might just seem like this is just a shot across the bow of the establishment but, more than that, it is the voice of the youth, the voice of those who are unheard in society. This is the voice that needs to be heard by those who refuse and chose not to listen. Janis Joplin merges the heavy bass grime sound with some melodic organ notes, which has the strange effect of making you almost just want to sit back, close your eyes, and listen. There are elements here that make this one seem like a homage to the late great blues singer. However, as you listen there is much about FR4NKIE’s own musical journey here too and that could well link to the inspiration of Janis. Guitars take the forefront on Benzema producing this melodic and atmospheric sound that you can easily lose yourself in. This one seems to flip the idea of the classic ballad as FR4NKIE brings us a track which is seemingly focused on being the best, which is mirrored, metaphorically speaking, by Real Madrid’s Karim Banzema and his achievement of winning the Ballon D’or in football.

Walk Through Fire features Cosmo Laurie and Trapson alongside FR4NKIE over a beat that has a more LoFi Hip Hop vibe with head nod drums, bass guitar and a multi-layered sound that has a chilled quality. This one really seems to take a look at the key experiences we have in growing up, the kind of situations that shape and mould us into who we are, these situations are not always easy but, we remember them and the strength they gave us to get to where we are. With that retrospective vibe still present the sound of rain enters our awareness with easy going keys, when the drum beat hits, the sound still retains a chilled element for One Of Them. This one has that ballad feel to it as FR4NKIE take us on a self-reflective journey that looks at mental health and how we can be too hard on ourselves, which is very much a result of our life experiences in growing up. The message here is really to lighten up and be easy on ourselves, this way we can be more our true selves. Is That You Yeah features Dizmack and Masovelli and has a more heavy bass sound to it which is underpinned by synth and strings to provide a more energetic vibe. This one was far more difficult to read as there was a lot of reflective thoughts and visions of how people are treated but, there is also a lot about striving to be better and believing in yourself.

We move into the final two tracks of the album with the penultimate track Mess, featuring Manchester Hypes, this one has a heavy bassline backed by electronic notes that play with your awareness, which works well with the titles of the track. Living in an urban environment seems to be getting worse and this track speaks on that by noting you see around you or experience day-to-day in the cities. There is violence on the rise, rubbish, pain and suffering all around, it’s a mess but, there is a yin and yang to everything and its not doom and gloom but, it us that has the power to change it. Moving into the final track, On My Own has guitar that takes the to the forefront alongside the drumbeat. Once more there is a reflective vibe to this one, which fits perfectly here with the deeply personal nature of the track. FR4NKIE looks back over some of his toughest struggles and shows how he work through these on his own by drawing on his internal strength to get him through.

Firstly, I have to backtrack a bit here. Earlier, in my intro, I noted this was the first grime album I would have reviewed But, after listening to the full album it is clear that this is not just a grime album, there are influences here from many genres including grime, Hip Hop, drill, trap and even EDM, making this a cross-genre album that may very well appeal to many different ears.

This was also a great challenge for me and was definitely not the easiest album I have ever reviewed. There are some musical influences here that are not genres that I ordinarily listen to, and I have never really gelled with the likes of EDM, for example, it was just a challenge to immerse myself in something different and find my own way to interpret what I was hearing. It is clear from the many influences that FR4NKIE is an accomplished artist who is more than able to mix up his rap styles and flows, using his chosen wordplay style to great effect to convey his messages. The use of his own personal experiences, some of which are deeply personal, gives this one an authentic and relatable edge, something that will appeal to many people even if the sound is not immediately to their liking.

There are some great features here and although none of the names are familiar to me, everyone of them works well on the individual tracks and alongside FR4NKIE. There are no points where anyone feels out of place, and they all display their own individual and unique rap talent.

The production is solid and provides the perfect musical backdrop. The wealth of influences really comes through here and shows an adept quality by Trolley Snatcha that reflects someone who has collaborated with the likes of Chase & Status and Flux Pavillion but, is willing to go beyond the type of music that he would normally be associated with and produce some more experimental work.

The title of the album, Overview Effect, comes from an experience that is described by astronauts, while in space and looking back at earth. Described as “a cognitive shift” and “a state of awe with self-transcendent qualities”, you can see why this was chosen as the title as FR4NKIE has put his experiences across life and the challenges of the working class in the UK today into and musical trip that touches on such themes as drug abuse and falling into a life of crime, alongside his musical journey and the cross genre sounds; something which, to me, is as much a cognitive shift as you can get in the underground music scene.

I definitely recommend you give this a listen, because I know there are people who are gonna love this but, also, as much as it was a challenge to me to step outside my normal box and listen to something completely different, I would say give it a listen before you judge it based solely on you own musical tastes, because you might be surprised.

The Overview Effect is released independently and is out now on all streaming platforms.

My thanks to William from the BH.WAV brand for bringing this one to my attention.

I’ll see ya next time,

Steve

Single Review: I Luv Her But She Does My Fuckin' Ed In by Cigarettes and Scratchcards

I Luv Her But She Does My Fuckin’ Ed In.

By

Cigarettes and Scratchcards

It was way back in April last year that I featured Manchester MC, Cigarettes and Scratchcards with his single 1984. That review, see link below, included some bio on the man, so this time I’m just gonna take you straight into the review.

So, let’s go…

Now, the title of this one leaves little to the imagination and conjures up a lot of thoughts and images of what this one could be about but, before we go judging the title and what we might hear, lets just take a listen.

As the heavy guitar kicks in, it’s immediately that this one is not my usual Hip Hop sound, this one has a heavy punk sound that is courtesy of live instruments. The vibe is high energy and the sound mixed with Cig’s rapped vocals brings some interesting images to the mind, that will probably appeal to some of the older Hip Hop crowd who, like myself, grew up in the 70’s and 80’s where punk rock was still a huge scene.

So, what does Cig’s have to say one this one? The first thing that you realise is that this single is not focused on an individual but, just like the original punk records, this one is a look at our country and the society we live in. So, the ‘Her’ in the title is Britannia, Great Britain or how ever you chose to see it. This one is, as you might expect, a proper political statement, in parts, with shots taken at the government, the banks, and a lot more. The main message here is that, you might well love the country in which you live but, the way that it is run by those who the people have placed in the highest position of power, plays with that affection; you may have been born here and have so much love for the family and friends that surround you, feel so much connection with countryside and the ancient sites of historical significance however, the struggles placed upon you by government, the banking system, and the things outside of your control, really push you to the point where you question the balance of love for the country over the stress caused by the powers that be.

Overall, you might call this a fusion of Rap and Punk and it is one of those tracks that might appeal to one camp or the other but, there will be a number of listeners that will enjoy that crossover sound and understand exactly where Cig’s is coming from in delivering a message in this way, as it reaches out beyond the rap or punk fans. But the real test for you the listener, is to give this one a go, have a listen and feel what is being said and then decide if it is for you.

For me it was not my normal sound but, that vibe mixed with the strong statements within, really had me feeling this one. OK, so it might not be something I’ll have on repeat necessarily but, it is one of those that you can come back to when you need an escape from the norm or a bit of a rant at the establishment, something that is needed right now, if we’re honest right!

I Luv Her but She Does My Fuckin’ Ed In by Cigarettes and Scratchcards is out now on all the usual streaming platforms.

Big up to Cigs for sending me something a little different to get my head into.

Till next time,

I’m Out.

Steve

Album Review: The Beatles Songbook Played by DJ Format

The Beatles Songbook

By

DJ Format

Getting the chance to put your talents to use on a release by someone such as DJ Format is one of those bucket list things, so when I got the chance to do this review for his new release, The Beatles Songbook, as part of the Weaponize Mixtape Series Volume 1, on Weaponize Records, then I had to give it a go, even if it did mean that my normal in-depth review style wouldn’t really work here for this kind of mix style release.

Now, I have been a fan of Format’s work ever since the release of Music For The Mature B-Boy back in 2003. Some of that was that he was born in the same city as me, Southampton, UK. But it was mainly due to the fact that he always came with the kind of banging Hip Hop tunes that always got you fired up and bouncing along to the music. As his career grew and he released more of these mega-mix style tracks, it gave me some great driving music to vibe to, which made those long journeys all the more enjoyable; loving the way he took you back to that foundation of Hip Hop and Breakin’ sound, mixing it all with some eclectic musical sounds to boot.

So, just what can you expect from The Beatles Songbook?

Here we find Format on fine form as he finally brings us something special, after chasing a desire, or obsession even, for ten years or more, and by that, I mean bring us a mix of lesser-known Beatles covers that are all seamlessly mixed together with the usual funky B-Boy breaks!

Now, I have to confess that I am not a huge fan of The Beatles music. I mean I know their stuff and heard plenty of it growing up before Hip Hop came along that is. but, and here’s the thing, this 65-minute mixtape really draws you in. There is such a wide range of genre’s than are covered in this mix that it makes you realise just how much of an impact the Fab Four had on so many people. From pop to rock, funk vibes, instrumentals and much more in a whole host of languages, Format has outdone himself by digging out a proper eclectic mix of covers to get your head nodding. Mixed in with all this is a good dose of breaks and beats to keep things really moving, plus a good sprinkling of little comical samples, such as Steve Coogan, that bring a light edge to proceedings and keep the enjoyment levels maxed out.

Whether you like The Beatles or not, there is a lot to like about this mix, there are plenty of recognisable tracks and some not so. There is also plenty of obscure versions that might not be instantly recognisable to you. It might also take you a couple of listens to really get into it, especially if you do what I did and spend the first listen thinking too much about the tracks.

The best way to enjoy this mix is to just sit back and listen, then you can vibe to the sound, with the changes in pace and those genre bending versions of those famous songs, really filtering through your awareness.

I honestly believe that both the lovers and the haters of The Beatles music will love this. The only ones who might struggle are the purists. The ones who only bow to the original sound and think that everything else is just sub-standard.

What is clear from listening to this mix, if you just take away the subject matter for a second, is that this is DJ Format doing what he does best; collecting a host of obscure records that the listener may never have heard of, and might otherwise have overlooked; then taking elements of those records along with a dash of other samples and mixing them all together to create a really fun and enjoyable release than has a definite timelessness factor.

This mix etches these tracks into your mind, mixing them together in a way that makes them as enjoyable now and, in the future, as they were when created, in fact some would say that this mixtape style actually makes the music more listenable and more enjoyable than those cover versions were. DJ Format also opens up The Beatles music, and these cover versions, to whole new audience who might now find they want to track down those original cover versions and also give a new listen to the original sound of The Beatles.

Reflecting back on this, I wasn’t sure that my words would be enough to express just how enjoyable this release is but, honestly, Format has done it again. He show’s his skill as a DJ, Producer, and mixer to breath new live into some dusty old crates full of music, proving once more that Hip Hop and the art of sampling and mixing can shine a whole new light on once forgotten music.

The Beatles Songbook played by DJ Format was available on limited CD and cassette; however, it is now sold out. If you were unlucky enough not to grab a CD or tape and still want one, then why not just petition Weaponize Records to do a third repress. I know this series is meant to be limited but, surely something as good as this needs to be something you can hold in your hand; and as it will not be made available on any DSP’s, perhaps a third re-up is really what’s needed here?

My huge thanks to Guy from Weaponize for giving me that chance to bring this one to you.

I’m outta here,

See Ya.

Steve.

Single Review: Filth 2000AD by Muz Tha Don

Filth 2000AD

By

MUZ Tha DON

Filth is the new single from MUZ and is the first single from his forthcoming EP Duality. Following the Wakefield emcees recent singles releases Swords Out, Under His Eye and Quid Game, all of which you can find reviews of on the blog, I was interested to see what this latest single was all about. His previous stuff always has this deep look at life around him and so it was safe to assume that Filth 2000AD would be no different.

So, let’s get into this…

The single comes with a number of mixes from different producers but, I’m gonna kick off with the mix by Traumkl, which will also feature in the video. The sonic sound that Traumkl has weaved for this is a pure assault on the senses. It creates this vibe which shreds every nerve and makes your head feel like you’re a victim of a scanner from David Cronenberg’s movie. The link between this and the novel by Irvine Welsh is not lost as MUZ focuses on the British justice system and those who enforce it in the public domain. There is a raw brutality to his words as he tears into the police and that far from being there to protect and serve the citizen’s, all they seem to do is enforce the wishes of the government. They have been given powers against those who chose to protest, even in a peaceful manner, such as the BLM protests and they even label protesters as terrorists and jihadists when they stand up for the persecution of others like the Palestinian peoples, as we have seen recently. It makes you wonder they are there to stand up for and protect the people or if they are there to keep us in line. Muz does such a good job putting the whole system in his sights and speaking up in a truthful and unapologetic nature and when you mix that with Traumkl’s sonic sound it creates something that you almost can’t bear to listen to but, at the same time, is strangely engaging.

Now, there are three additional remixes of the song that come with the single release and I’m gonna take a quick look at each and see if and how these remixes work with the subject matter of the track…

First up is the remix by ChillsMyth, which combines a laid-back beat with some chilled organ vibes which really calms the delivery of MUZ’s vocals. It helps bring a more thoughtful air to the track giving more focus to the lyrics allowing them the stage to really speak to you.

Next up is the remix by Micro Deform, this one brings another assault on the senses with a heavy industrial sonic sound that rips your awareness apart and seems, like the original from Traumkl, to reflect the often-brutal nature of justice and the police. There is this slight change to the musical vibe as the track plays out, and almost thinks thing are getting better before ending with a sound that reminds you that’s not the case.

Finally, we have the Pandamonium Remix, which takes a more boom bap beat and mixes it with harp and electronic sounds that gets you head nodding while still twisting those already frayed nerves. This mix allows more focus on the vocals once more and in a way that will appeal to the Hip Hop headz big time.

Releasing this one on Halloween is a stroke of genius because the brutal nature of the track which shines a light on the often-horrific nature of how the police and justice systems treat the people they are supposed to protect, is pretty much the worst kind of horror movie you can imagine. When your protectors become the enforcers, it causes to wonder the true nature of what sort of society we are living in, especially when people are persecuted for exercising their right to free speech and standing up for injustice and what they truly believe in. It does seem that these cases of police brutality and the unfair treatment of the justice system, is on the rise and MUZ sees this and brings this fairly and squarely into our awareness in an unflinching manor.

His words seem to be delivered in a brutal way to reflect the nature of the subject matter. His flow and lyrics still have that slick nature but, the delivery gives them a suitable edge that is exactly what is needed when dealing with this kind of subject.

I have to say that this sets up a very interesting and deep vibe for the coming EP and if you listen to one single this Halloween, make it this one and see which mix hits you the hardest.

Filth 2000AD is out today.

My thanks to Muz for giving me the opportunity to review this one.

I need a rest after that one,

See Ya,

Steve.

Single Review: Tracy Song / 4 Meters by David Chalfant

Tracy Song / 4 Meters

By

David Chalfant

Tracy Song and its B-Side 4 Meters by David Chalfant is the debut release from Unsettled Scores Records and before I get into this release, I think it’s important to give you some background.

Firstly, Unsettled Score records is the brainchild of Dan Sawkins (aka Deejay Skamrok) and when the chance to review this release came up I asked him about the new label and how it came about and this is what he had to say:

The idea for the label came about around 2015/6, I was into a bunch of the soundtrack labels at the time and had a list of titles in my head that I wished someone would release, not thinking for a second it was something I could do as I thought you had to have major backing to start a label. Then I heard an interview with Kevin Bergeron from Waxwork Records, he said when starting the label, he was denied a bank loan, so he sold off his musical equipment to get the money together. Hearing that interview made me realise I could do it myself too without a loan or any backing. All the money it took to start my label has been 100% funded by selling records from my personal collection.

With that in mind, I wondered what the label was likely to release moving forward:

There’s gonna be a mixed bag of music coming from Unsettled Scores Records in the coming years, there’s so many obscure on screen tunes that I want to see on my label but also very well-known scores and soundtracks to movies that I grew up with, this won’t be a label dedicated to one style of music, Hip Hop will always be my first love but my taste in music generally is wide so expect all sorts.

So, lets move on to this debut release, back in 2002 the classic 1983 documentary about the New York graffiti scene, ‘Style Wars’ saw an expanded 2-DVD release that included a host of bonus extras. Part of those bonus extra’s was a section called “Classic Hits” from Tracy 168 (who sadly passed away recently) which featured some rare super 8 footage of some of the early writers of the mid-70s. The track playing over that section has never seen the light of day until now, and that track is Tracey Song, which was composed especially for this footage by David Chalfant, the son of Henry Chalfant the photographer and videographer who documented so much of the Hip Hop culture including ‘Style Wars’ and many books.

Now, if it was not enough that Tracy Song now receives its long overdue release, but David Chalfant also recorded a brand-new track to serve as the flip side to this release, 4 Meters. How amazing is that…

So, please join me on my journey into this release…

Tracy Song has this infectious Latin Rock vibe that makes it hard to anything else but, nod your head move your body to the music. The drums, bass and guitars create this energetic sound that fuels the adrenaline and injects every joint of your body with this desire to move to the groove. However, there is also the connection to ‘Style Wars’ and for those who know, the more you listen, the more it puts you in mind of the documentary and the energy in the sound makes you think of what it must have felt like for the writers, out there after dark in the train yards and subway tunnels or on the subway trains themselves, expressing who they were and making their mark the only way they knew how, ‘on society’. Whenever, the writers went out they would be putting themselves at risk of arrest or even death as they jumped the third rail or avoided oncoming subway trains; the energy running through their bodies in those moments is what David Chalfant has captured on this track but, in a way that brings enjoyment and pays homage to what those writers were doing.

4 Meters has a far more funk infused sound, still using the drums, bass, keys, and electric guitar but, that 70’s funk vibe brings a different feel, while still keeping you moving to the groove. For those of us who still have that Graff connection in mind, David has created a sound here that seems to move you from the thrill of the previous night to a whole new thrill; this time it’s a whole new day and it’s all about getting out there to see your tags, throw-ups and pieces running on the trains as they pass by, “uptown, downtown, all over”. Writers went from tags on the trains and walls, to getting their names up bigger and better, with a desire to go all-city.

What is amazing about this release is that it appeals to such a wide range of listeners; The Hip Hop heads will love it for its connection to ‘Style Wars’ and the graffiti scene as part the culture but, it will also appeal to those who love the Graff scene but, who are not exclusively Hip Hop, those who love soundtracks will love it as a previously unreleased piece of music and then it will also appeal to those who love good music or the Latin vibe or funk vibe, the list is almost endless because, at the end of the day, if you love the way music makes you feel and uplifts you, then this one is, most definitely, for you.

Unsettled Scores Records has, for it’s debut release, brought you a slice of history backed by something new and unheard from a composer that most will be unfamiliar with but, in doing that they have brought the name David Chalfant into lives of many and made a very bold and exciting statement as to what to expect from the label as it moves forward.

For me, I found that overall, Tracy Song and 4 Meters showed just how universal music can be. In one context, it fits with the Graff scene and its mid-70s roots but, even if you take away that context and the connection to Hip Hop, you still have two fantastic tracks, with slightly different styles of inspiration, from David Chalfant that you can enjoy no matter where you are or what you are doing.

Not only do I highly recommend this one for your collection but, I suggest that you keep an eye on Unsettled Scores Records in the future and perhaps look out for the name of David Chalfant as well.

My humble thanks to Dan for allowing me to review this debut release.

I would like to dedicate this review to the memory of the late Tracy 168 R.I.P.

On that note,

Be seeing ya,

Steve.

Album Review: Everything's Turning Up Dusty by Krash Slaughta

Everything’s Turning Up Dusty

By

Krash Slaughta

Something that came out of Hip Hop music that I always loved were two things, the Megamix and the Cut n Paste mix. In fact, they were pivotal for me in that they spawned the ‘Pause Button’ mixes that we all loved back in the 80’s. Regardless of how you did it the tape-to-tape mixing was fun, and I still have some of my efforts around somewhere. I would enjoy finding my favourite tracks and adding bits from recordings of TV programs such as The Comic Strip and would enjoy trying to make party megamix tapes and the like, it’s a wonder I never progressed into vinyl mixing at the time.

As we moved into the 90’s it was the mixtape that became bigger with DJ’s remixing tracks and Emcee’s rapping over classic instrumental tracks and then mixing it all together. I would often listen to all these alongside recordings of the DMC mix championships and be amazed at how DJs could do what they did.

Fast forward to the present day and what might happen if you were to merge the Cut n Paste mix with a mixtape vibe? Step forward Glasgow based Krash Slaughta, a true legend in the game, who has put together just that on Everything’s Turning Up Dusty. This double LP limited edition vinyl is an hour long and consists of four sides of Cut n Paste musical goodness alongside some banging remixes to boot. The album took four months to make, with each of the four mixes taking one month to produce.

So, join me as I do my best to put my enjoyment of this stunning release into words…

Side One bursts into your ears with that classic Cut n Paste sound, and you can’t help but, smile and nod your head as you listen along. Mixed into this are sound bites from Blade Runner, Graff writer interviews, Marijuana info film, funk breaks, electronic vibes and so much more. There is also a remix of Time’s Up by O.C. that gives it this Pink Floyd, prog rock kind vibe; following on from this is an upbeat remix of So Let The Fun Begin by Stetsasonic, which has this bass and piano vibe that is just so wicked. This brings side One to a close and it’s time to flip over.

Side Two kicks off with this banging horn heavy remix of On The Smooth Tip by Sweet Tee before breaking into more funky dopeness over which is a recording of part of a story from Masters of the Universe, just to add more of a grin to your face. Following this Krash brings in a pounding remix of Quality Control from Jurassic 5, which has some mind bending, nerve tingling electronic elements mixed in. The breaks and razor-sharp cuts keep coming as you vibe to every little element, including the Beat Street element; before we are treated to funky drum remix of Torture Chamber by Edan ft Percee P. Next, we get this almost two tone, ragga vibe for the remix of Made You Look (Remix) by Nas ft Jadakiss and Ludicris. As this side comes to an end Bruce Lee reminds us to be like water, a timely reminder as we now need to be fluid in changing the record to side 3…

Side Three begins to sonic vibes before things kick off in a funky way to get that head nodding once more. Time for some Ol’ Dirty Bastard with Krash Slaughta reinterpreting Shimmy Shimmy Ya!, to this horn heavy, uplifting infectious sound that gets your whole body moving. Next track getting the remix treatment is Melody by Nu Mark and Pomo ft MF DOOM, with a funky horn heavy sound keeping you bouncing along. More funky breaks and turntable trickery, jazz vibes, sonic sounds, samples and add breaks ensue before its time to flip to record one last time…

Side Four begins with a big orchestral intro before we break into a jazz horn remix of Definition of a King by Two Kings in a Cipher. Funk breaks and a comedic look at how to be a rapper then brings a grin. A funky jazz vibe heralds the remix of Movin’ On by Gang Starr which is sure to get you movin’ and groovin’, Then comes the voice of Phill Most Chill taking us to the Rebel Base with Krash Slaughta mixing it up once more. From the rebel base we move into some outer space vibes with Krash Slaughta making a visit to the space bank before moving into hyperspace with more funky interstellar breaks. Drums, funky keys, and guitar vibes are the main components of the last remix, which is I Gotta Good Thing by Superlover Cee and Casanova Rud before we finally have round off this epic album.

Everything I have said above really just scratches the surface of what Everything’s Turning Up Dusty is. When you consider that Krash Slaughta has always wanted to make a cut n paste mix, and then he comes up with something that truly takes that genre of music to a whole new level. When you consider the likes of Coldcut’s Say Kids and Beats and Pieces or Double Dee and Steinski’s The Lesson series, Everything’s Turning Up Dusty emulates everything those classic releases did in taking elements of classic tracks, sound bites, infomercials, interviews and more, mixing and mashing them all together to produce something that was a whole new element of Hip Hop music. There is nothing you can’t do with the cut n paste mix and Krash Slaughta really does display that with aplomb.

To be perfectly honest, it is very hard to review something like this and really do it justice with my words because there are just too many elements to break down but, what I can do is to say with all my heart that this truly is one of the most amazing displays of the cut n paste genre that I have heard and when you consider the work that Krash Slaughta has put into this, it truly deserves to be placed up there with the best of them; it also shows the talent he has in crafting such a release, this is homage to the cut n paste mix but, also an incredible stand-alone audible spectacle.

My best advice would be for you to listen, listen and listen again to this because Everything’s Turning Up Dusty is never gonna get old, in fact, this is one set of vinyl’s I can never see collecting dust and turning up Dusty.

I take my hat off to Krash Slaghta on this one and also give him my humble thanks for the chance to drop a few words about this stunning release.

On that note,

I’m outta here,

Steve.

EP Review: Banff Avenue by Dragon Fli Empire

Banff Avenue

By

Dragon Fli Empire

Way back in 1991, my Twenty First year on this planet, I went on holiday to meet family in Canada. During that trip we visited Banff, Alberta, A stunningly beautiful part of Canada. I had no idea back then that nearly 32 years later I would be reviewing an EP based around that place. However, the latest release from AE Productions is a reissue of Dragon Fli Empire’s 2020 release, Banff Avenue.

This will be the first time that Banff Avenue has been released on vinyl and it is a joint venture between AE and Make Believe Records (DFE’s own label) and has been remastered especially for the vinyl release by Rola at Khameleon Studios, Bristol, UK. Previously only available via download or CD, the collaboration was born during the release of MR Fantastic’s 2021 single Breakdown, which featured TeeKay on vocals. As the head of AE Productions, Mr Fantastic felt that Banff Avenue deserved a vinyl release and Dragon Fli Empire (Teekay and DJ Cosm) agreed. Fast forward to now and allowing for all the pressing delays due to the pandemic, Banff Avenue is now available as a full vinyl release. Those familiar with the original release will note that the vinyl release has a different running order to the original release, and this was done in order to give the vinyl a better balance of cut quality and volume.

With all that in mind, please join me as we take a trip down Banff Avenue

We are not on the road long before we enter Banff Ave, with its laid-back drums, tambourine, and chilled cuts. We gaze lazily out the window as the stunning scenery glides by and Teekay steps up as our tour guide, providing a verbal description of everything we need to take note of on our trip, from the Canadian Rockies to sights and sounds of the town of Banff, he expertly creates an audible vision for us, even with our eyes closed we can still see everything as his words float through our awareness. Keeping it chilled the sound shifts slightly to chilled jazzy mix of drums, bass, and organ notes as we slide into Overtime. With the sun going down Teekay regales us with stories from DFE’s past and getting to where they are now. He keeps us hanging on his every word, having us picturing everything in our mind’s eye while, with every pause, we are treated to DJ Cosm brining our awareness back to the present, cutting it up on the 1’s and 2’s. Just as we are considering turning in for the night Teekay and DJ Cosm turn it up and get our adrenaline flowing with an upbeat banger with pounding drums, bass, and a plethora of cuts. On My Way has us up on our feet as DFE rocks the crowd in true Hip Hop fashion with slick flows, deft wordplay, and cuts galore. We get schooled on the where DFE are from, some of their inspirations and where they are at now is right here turning the party out. The focus shifts once more as we approach the end of our first day, or side a if you will. A beatbox and drum fuelled intro brings us into Talkin at Movies, bass and guitar vibes join the beat as Teekay takes a tongue-in-cheek look at those people who choose the talk all the way through, when you’re trying to sit and watch a good movie. This one brings a grin to your face not just because we’ve all been in this situation but, also because that beatbox brings to mind the late great Biz Markie (R.I.P), and if you’re bringing that real Hip Hop sound, you gotta have the beatbox too. With day one over it’s time for a brief pause as we flip to day two…

The needle descends and the sun rises on day two with the DFE and we are greated by a funky vibe created by chilled drums, bass, and keys, with a dash of cuts and a sprinkling of horns to cap it all off. As the beat gets you moving, our first stop is the Vortex as Teekay guides us expertly into parallel universes with his slick, intelligent, mystic wordplay. All of us having our own individual experiences, leaves us wondering just where we are going next, even questioning if this is still Canada or not but, we are not questioning the current state of reality for long before xylophone notes have us back in Banff just as the bass and drum beat kicks in and we are suddenly Looking For Tomorrow. The jazzy vibe has us nodding our heads as Teekay takes us deeper into the vision and sound of DFE. This one really makes you think about where you are, where you’ve been and understanding that to get where you’re going you need to have a vision for tomorrow, something that you can literally reach out and grab, constantly pulling you forward. Before you know it, we are here at the final track, the end of our journey with DFE. Piano notes, horns and drums give us this after-hours jazz sound, creating this chilled vibe as DFE asks us, How Ya Doin. This is like a check in between us and them, just making sure we are all doing well after our time together on Banff Avenue but, it is also a reminder to check in on those around you, just to see how they are doing, something as simple as this can go a long way, trust me. As we leave Banff Avenue, we know that this is nor like any other trip because we can just put the vinyl on anytime and go back…

It's always a pleasure to listen to something that allows to use your imagination to slip away out of your reality and into a different space and time, and Banff Avenue is one of those listening moments that does that so perfectly. On one hand you know that this is, pure and simple, real Hip Hop but, then DFE have also crafted this EP that flows so well and is such a pleasure to listen to and expertly allows you to create this mental picture of this journey to Banff area of the Canadian Rockies. OK, so I have been to Banff but, that was a long time ago but, this EP does stir up the memories of the rugged mountain peaks, conifer forests that flank the town. A place where you step from the hustle and bustle of the streets into the calm of the surrounding countryside.

Now I have not heard the original version of Banff Avenue yet but, I do like how this version flows. It does create this feeling like you are on an audible trip with DFE. It has this feel that you travel into the town and arrive through Banff Ave and Overtime, then there is this upbeat peak across On My Way and Talkin At The Movies and then journey continues through Vortex and Looking For Tomorrow before being rounded of with How Ya Doin. The progression seemed so obvious that it created this whole feeling of a journey that it had me creating this vibe as I wrote. The sound of the tracks really does carry you so well, it’s like a breath of fresh air and all credit to DJ Cosm for his production which is so on point here. Teekay also does an excellent job with his descriptive lyricism that has you visualising what he describes at every step. Not just that but, he switches so well in his flows and styles it is just a perfect display of everything I love about rap within Hip Hop music.

I have to be honest here and wonder how I missed this the first-time round, it’s a mystery to me but, I’m so please to have caught this now because it is such a pleasure to listen to and one a wholeheartedly recommend that you listen to.

My humble thanks to Mr Fantastic for sending this one my way.

Banff Avenue is available now on vinyl from AE Productions. CD and Digital is still available from the DFE Bandcamp Page.

On that note,

It’s time for me to go back to Banff,

See ya next time.

Steve.

Album Review: Strange Places & Familiar Faces by Max Thomson

Strange Places & Familiar Faces

By

Max Thomson

Strange Places & Familiar Faces is the latest album from Glastonbury based recording artist Max Thomson. I met Max, through Gfm (Glastonbury FM) community radio, the day before I was due to attend the gig by the Scribes at Glastonbury’s Red Brick Building. Max was due to be support for The Scribes and so I took this opportunity to forward my talents in reviewing his latest album, and after hearing his set and speaking to Jonny Steele, of The Scribes, I’m glad I did.

Before I get into the album lets just get a little insight into just who is Max Thomson:

Max Thomson grew up in Glastonbury, UK and started making music at a young age. To begin with he would beatbox for his friends as they rapped in freestyle cyphers at the local parks. He then turned his focus to understanding that art of lyricism while studying Music tech at college. Since then, he has spent years developing his skills as a singer songwriter, producer & rapper.

Max's style and content is often very deep and thought provoking, with beautiful songs that explore and celebrate the flaws and perfect imperfections of all human beings. He has a big focus on lyrical content but never forgets about the overall sound of the piece of music.

If you want to zone out and let the music wash over you, then a lot of his catalogue
can put you in a euphoric state of peace. But donʼt get it twisted! If you want to get turnt up and party, Max also comes with hard hitting bars and beats that are sure to get you
out of your seat.

The album kicks of with Superman, which has this laid-back drill vibe to it with a chilled drum vibe alongside horns and a xylophone style sound. Listening to this you get this feel that what Max is saying here is that his music is not about the fame and fortune but, it’s about making the music he loves and then bringing that music to the fans and it’s that appreciation by the fans that really makes him like Superman. You might not have superpowers but, the feeling of hearing how much people enjoy that music is what brings the energy that makes you feel like you do have those superpowers. Next up is Familia, this has a more Hip Hop feel to it with heavy drums and this mixed in flute sound that tweaks at your nerves slightly, helping you to focus on the words. From the title you might think that this one is all about family however, the more you listen you realise that this one id focusing on racial inequality and the fact that music, be it Hip Hop or otherwise, does not support racial stereotypes when it comes to the music. It’s all about the music and if you can make that good music then, essentially, although you might not recognise someone immediately, you’re still family by virtue of your mutual love of good music. Acoustic guitar and piano notes lead us into Vice City, when the beat drops it has that drill/trap sound to it. This one really looks into the vice’s that can be a temptation for us as we move through life. Whether you’re looking for a one off good time or something to drown out the pain you see in the world around you, these vice’s can give you that quick buzz or they can put you into an eternal sleep. I guess the real message here is to know what you are getting into, don’t let it become an addiction and don’t give into the demons and let them take from those you love…

After Burn creates this air of smoking that green with its laid-back drums, acoustic guitar and cymbals that seem to swing between genre’s, sometime feeling more like trap and others just carrying the sound. The essence of this one is taking one hit or more just to calm the nerves when experiencing a relationship breakup. Sometimes when we are in a dark place, we retreat into a space to try and make sense and come to terms with a situation, we all do it differently and here we find that individual experience of dealing with those difficult feelings. Strange Places is the albums title track. The track is kind of in two parts, which begins with this calming guitar driven element which is essentially sung by Max in which he briefly details coming to the southwest and what he has come with and has to give. Then this chilled beat drops in with this trap vibe to it, while also being soulful, this forms the backdrop for him to speak more how being here feels, in a strange way, like a familiar place. I guess it’s almost like that Deja-vu feeling you get when you go to a place you’ve never been but, immediately feel you been there before, and you know this is exactly where you need to be in life. With those feelings of high strangeness still floating in our awareness we are greeted by the incredible vocals of Brittney Barber taking us into I Wonder. The guitar vibes and beat have this soulful Hip Hop feel that has a very thoughtful feel to it and that feeling stays with you as you listen and take on-board what is being said. This is all about the struggles in life that we all encounter, those times when we turn our heads to the sky and wonder if it’s all worth it, it feels like a lonely place, and we wonder if anyone can truly hear our calls of desperation. Just the realisation that there are people out there can often be enough to push on through the darkness and make it into the light once more, finding out that someone was listening, a realisation that brings so much…

Cruising stays on that chilled trap sound with the drums more in forefront and backed by some chilled organ notes. This one is all about those times that we have those moments of clarity, understanding what’s going on for us and knowing things need to change. These are the times when we just need to cruise for a while, not thinking too much, just watching for a while as life drifts by in the rear view. Ther doesn’t have to be a destination just a knowing that when we get there, we’ll be exactly where we need to be in life. Organ notes take us into Call Me Crazy before the beat and bass drop in on what is an upbeat funk fuelled sound. That sound works so well here on a track that is all about meeting a special woman who you feel so strongly about you would do anything for her to want to be with you. It’s really just that simple. Drums, bass, and synth vibes create this upbeat sound that has a dash of funk and a twist of soul for Love, Drugs & Music. Now, if you have wondered what an alternative rap love story might sound like, then you need look no further because that is what this on is. The foundation is that it’s a love story but, then there are some distinct tongue-in-cheek elements too that all mix in with the underground street vibe to bring you this alternative look at what the love story of today looks like…

We drift into the final quarter of the album with Oxymoron, which is simple in its complexity and see’s Max drop a track that is littered with more contradiction in terms than you might care to shake a stick at. Also, you see this contradiction in terms within the music, albeit on a more subtle level, as the chilled melodic beat is interspersed with high paced cymbals, creating a musical background that fits perfectly with the subject matter. The penultimate track is Obsessed, which has this soulful hip hop vibe which is created from this mix of drums, keys, and guitars. Here we find Max singing for the entire track as he finds himself obsessed with someone and the track see’s his internal struggle in trying to get the thoughts and feels for this person out of his head, in order to free himself. The last track of the album is Hometown Love (Feat Kate’s Poem) R.I.P Harry. The sound is piano driven with chilled beat over the top creating this sound that makes you want to sit back and reminisce, and that is exactly what Max does here. For Max the hometown is Glastonbury but, we all have a hometown we have memories and thoughts of. This is another song of too halves and the second half of this track is a wonderful memorial poem from Kate that says so much in a way that we can associate with when we think of a good friend we have loved and lost. Can’t think of a more personal and emotive way to end on…

Now, I heard Max live before I heard the album and that makes listening to the album a slightly different experience as more often than not, we always hear the studio recordings before the live sets. So, I went into this review thinking, OK I’ve been impressed by the live set so what can I expect from the studio album?

Honestly, I felt that Strange Places & Familiar Faces was such an impressive and enjoyable album overall and just goes to show how long you can live in a place without always discovering the true wealth of musical talent it has to offer. Musically, it mixes things up with a majority of the sound being based in the realms of the more modern rap sound but, it also incorporates elements of other genres and sound while retaining that grip on a foundation of Hip Hop. This all adds up to a multi-genre sound that will appeal to a wide range of audiences the world over. I know that sound is not going to appeal to everyone though, but no single form of music always does have that appeal and so if you base you decision on the sound alone, then you are missing one fundamental aspect, which is the vocal talent of Max Thomson.

As a rapper/vocalist Max has got some skills, you have to be honest here. He switches in up in terms of his range of flows and in his styles of rap, and at the same time this guy can harmonise and sing at the same time. So, as an underground artist he has this range that means he can switch things about and create a sound that is easily enjoyable across a wide range of genres. This means that you can listen to this album and think to yourself that you’re not keen on that element of the sound but, it doesn’t matter because everything works well here and keeps you listening and focusing on Max’s wordplay and the content of what he is saying. He also incorporates some fun parts alongside more personal and emotive elements, this sometimes keeps you guessing as to what’s what, which is ultimately a huge part of what grabs your attention.

For me Max Thomson has been one of Glastonbury’s best kept secrets and one that I am now glad I have become aware of, and I’d like to suggest that you do the same. Firstly, check out Strange Places & Familiar Faces, of course, and that check out his other work, and then be sure to catch him live too as he is cracking live and a really nice bloke too.

I’d like to personally thank Max for giving me the album to review and for the bio I have included above in italics. I look forward to seeing more of him once I get started at Gfm (soon to become GWS Radio) in Glastonbury.

Strange Places & Familiar Faces is out now on digital, streaming and there are also some physical CD’s available too, you might need to contact Max direct or pop into Rogues Gallery in Glastonbury who have a limited number of copies available.

On that note,

Time for me to be out,

See Ya.

Steve.
