It was nearly two years ago now that I featured KJ with his album Taxi Ride (2024). During that time, he has had a few projects out, one of which in this one, You Got No Fans. This one was originally released a year ago in February of 2025, but I didn’t get a copy until recently. The reason for that is KJ sent me another album, which went awol in the post (a couple of CD’s have done so recently sadly) and so he sent me this one instead, which was cool as I remember all the fun video’s KJ put out to promo the album.

I’m not going to drop a lengthy intro here, so if you want to know more about the Welsh emcee/producer, check the Taxi Ride review for more info. That said let’s get straight into things…

 

The album kicks off with the title track You Got No Fans which features internet legend The Wealdstone Raider (you find plenty about him on the web, trust me), which samples the infamous video he features in from 2013. This one has a nice beat, that gets ya head nodding, backed by keys, bass and more, giving you a sound that is solid Hip Hop, with a little LoFi edge. KJ’s lyrics have a very tongue-in-cheek vibe about them as he gives us look at his wordplay while taking pot shots at the other rappers out there. This one brings that football banter style to Hip Hop braggadocio. Guitar vibes and a solid head nod beat form the backdrop of Skillz.  Here KJ continues a bit of that Hip Hop braggadocio by bigging up the skills he has to do a great many things. The light-hearted vibe continues here too as he invites others to step up by goading them on the chorus by saying ‘Yeah, I got skills, what you gonna do about it’. Simping brings a chilled beat with a big bass guitar vibe giving this one a chilled out edge with the keys and vocal elements. This one is all about being attracted to someone and showing an abundance of attention. It feels like this one is all about the things you would love to say to someone, who might not know or show the same in return, but the desire for attraction and close contact is there all the same.

Siren brings a beat that is backed by horns, keys and vocal samples, giving this one a sound that has that LoFi edge to it. This is one of those tracks that is a dedication to that special woman in his life. But this not a track where things get too soppy, this is a Hip Hop love song where similes and metaphors do all the talking by taking you off to another realm. Samurai is a short track where a pounding beat is backed by Japanese musical sounds to give this one a sound that transports you a place that seems far more personal. There are elements to this one that strike you as a frank discussion on the internal struggles of what you see around you and how you carry yourself in the face of that adversity, so you are able to raise yourself up. Cleaning The Mind (Phase 4) hits with a heavy beat that is back with some electronic sounds that give this on a very reflective air to it. Listening to this one you instantly realise that this is a deeply personal track. Touching on subjects such as addiction, depression, and much more. Reflecting on this type of lived experience is something many of us can associate with. I know there has been many times I have felt like clearing my own mind by opening up about my life. The deeply personal aspect of this one is hard to convey, in truth, and is the kind of track that you just need to listen to and understand.

ART-IST merges acoustic guitar elements with a more chilled beat and electric guitar vibes which give this one a different reflective sound. KJ gives a look at what it means to him to be an artist, doing what he does and bringing a wide range of styles and vibes to the listener. It’s not about the payday but, about the music and what that means to both KJ and those who listen to what he has to offer. Now we have an insight into KJ as an artist its time to turn our attention to I Don’t Battle. This one kicks off and features elements of Cartman from South Park, which should tell you a lot about where this one is headed. The beat is pounding with a nerve jangling flute kind of aspect and vocal samples, which kind of soften things a little. KJ goes all in on this one, in a tongue-in-cheek kind of way with unapologetic and no punches pulled vocals that will probably have you laughing out loud, unless you have some reservations over the content, it’s definitely not for kids by the way. KJ says he don’t battle anymore but, with wordplay like this any battle would quickly descend into chaotic scenes with everyone falling about laughing. Before we realise it we are already at the penultimate track of the album, Marmyte. More deep bass guitar vibes and a pulse pounding beat gets your head nodding to this one from the get-go. Here, KJ mixes Hip Hop braggadocio with just fun kind of wordplay, and just like a certain food stuff with a similar name, you are gonna love it or hate it. For me, I love it personally, just like that certain food stuff. So, just listen to this one and enjoy it with a smile. The final track of the album is Monster, which hits with another head nod vibe alongside an electronic vibe that puts you in mind of some weird lab where a crazed doctor creates a monster. This on sees KJ take us into the mind of both the creator and the monster, using distorted vocals for the monster. It takes us on crazed journey from the creation  of the monster, its rampage, and then the final meeting with its creator…

 

There is a lot to like about You Got No Fans, because KJ had moved away from the boom bap sound and had dipped more into LoFi sounds with deeper story telling vibes, but here he takes himself back to a more solid Hip Hop sound, although elements of the LoFi sound can be heard creeping in here too. KJ also brings together two incredibly important elements of Hip Hop music as the album is kind of two thirds just for fun and Hip Hop braggadocio, and one third deeply personal and relevant storytelling that gives you much to think about. Incorporating these two aspects was something that I felt worked so well. Having deeply personal and relatable content is always something that makes for quality Hip Hop music and keeps this relevant, relatable, and authentic for the listener. But once in a while it is good to listen to Hip Hop that has a fun and uplifting edge which makes you smile as much as you enjoy listening to it, which also means you don’t have to give it too much thought, and there is nothing wrong with that either. We all need a little break from reality every now and then.

You Got No Fans is a quality self-produced album which gives us plenty of slick wordplay, whether it is making us smile, which the appearance of The Wealdstone Raider certainly does, or making us think. KJ shows us that he is more than able to switch things up both in his production and in his delivery and flows. The outcome is a ten track album that really needs little in the way of words from me to tell you what it is all about, even though I have done just that. What this album really needs is for you to give it a listen and enjoy it. I do feel that, although this one is primarily Hip Hop at heart, it has enough additional influences as to make it highly listenable to a lot of people.

EP Review: Smoke On The Water by Joe Blow

Smoke on the Water is a six track EP that was released back at the beginning of May this year through Veteran Records. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I have had to delay the review until now.

Joe Blow is a veteran of the South Wales Underground and an emcee, producer and DJ. Smoke On The Water sees him teaming up with legendary Cardiff producer AckoBeatzuk, who produces the project, and the equally legendary DJ Jaffa, who provides all the cuts and scratching. Just looking at that line-up makes you want to stop everything and hit play.

This review will be the first time I have featured Joe Blow on his own solo project. However, I did feature him as a guest on 4Dee’sShots Fired album from 2023. Joe had a very early introduction to music as his mother would put a radio under his pram as a baby to help him sleep. Later he would play records from his brothers’ collection, on his brothers’ turntable while he was out, and would still do the same but, on his own turntable once he had one. In fact, it was discovering the 12 inch single of RUN DMC’s My Adidas, that would influence Joe’s musical tastes and dress code from that moment onwards. Later, Joe would go on to form the group Undecorated Veteranz, alongside 4DEE and the late DJ Stagga. Now, with over thirty years in the game Joe Blow is looking to cement his place in Hip Hop history…

 

The EP kicks off with Break Away where strings take the forefront, with a sprinkle of horns, over the solid head nod beat. This creates this vibe that brings feelings of summer days and sun filled winter getaways. Here Joe cleverly spins stories that are full of retrospective insights that speak of the situations and people you have to break away from in order to walk forward in life and your career. This is something that we can all associated with as we look back on our lives. There is a lot here that speaks on making the most of your life and always walking forward even if there are things and those you have to leave behind to do that, never let yourself get held back. Ride or Die sees the drums softened into the background as guitar and horn vibes take centre stage. This gives the whole sound a vibe that has that mariachi feel to it. Here that storytelling vibe speaks deeply on connecting with that special someone. A person who is more that just a significant other but, who is your best friend and has your back, no matter the situation. Less of a love story and more of a dedication to a love that runs deep. This is all finished off with some classic cuts from DJ Jaffa. We move into the half-way point of the EP with Super Nova. This one has a heavy guitar sound which gives this one a rock rap sound that tears the speakers open with the force of sun at the end of its life. This one is a platform for Joe Blow to set the stories and messages aside and literally just go all in and drop some insatiable bars that show the quality and intricacy of his wordplay. So, sit back and slap this one on and just bounce to it…

We cross the tipping point easily with Count Of Three where organ notes, guitars and psychedelic vibes merge with banging drum beat to give us the kinda sound that transcends the traditional sound of 3D world, taking you places unknown. Here we find Joe letting go of the world around him, not to just spit some sick rhymes but, to open up to the fact that sometimes to find the peace in the world it takes the smoking of a certain plant to aid taking to that place where you can that let go of reality and darkness in the world and find another place where you can find that peace and write the right rhymes. There is a feint air of the psychedelic vibe on Ten Outta Ten, where the beat is mixed with a harpsichord sound that helps blur the edges of reality once more. Here Joe is laying out all his cards on the table with a dash of braggadocio as he drops bars that tell us exactly what he is all about and how the work that goes into those bars makes that a solid Ten Outta Ten every time, and after listening to this one, I think you’ll agree. The Ep ends with High Noon, this one has a heavy sound that has this sound that seems to invade your mind with needle like sounds that keep you focused on the words while the cuts vibrate those needle like sounds, bringing a sound that is like funk on sci-fi. With this one the get the sense that Joe is basically saying that there comes a time when you have to stand and face what’s in front of you or maybe what’s within you?  Whatever it is that you stand and face, and for whatever the reason is, even if it is for a life of peace, you need to stand and face it for you, because you can’t face it for anyone else. This is his and your high noon, the point that everything has been flowing towards…

 

There is no doubt here that Smoke On The Water is a solid masterclass from Joe Blow. It has everything you could want from witty rhymes to complex wordplay, with polished flows too boot. Joe perfectly demonstrates why he is a veteran in the game. He does not let up or play safe but, gives everything 100%, giving us a release that stand up as one of the best so far this year; and if we are speaking of it being one of the best, then can’t overlook DJ Jaffa on the cut, who always delivers,  or incredible soundscapes from AckoBeatzuk, who has delivered a variety of sounds, all of which are rooted in the Hip Hop sound.

There really is not a whole lot more I can say that what I have already done so but, if you enjoy this one as much as I did then you will find yourself coming away from that with adrenaline buzzing through your veins and a deep desire to listen again while searching through Joe’s back catalogue on Bandcamp to see what else you can sink your ears into. This EP does do that; it makes you want to hear more from all involved. But what it does more than anything is to well and truly cement Joe Blow’s status into the annuls of Hip Hop history, not just in Wales or the UK, but into Hip Hop as a whole. It’s a bold statement I know but, there is just something about that witty, no nonsense style that says he deserves to be there.

So, if you have not heard this one yet, then I humbly advise you to give it a listen now, because you won’t regret it and will probably love it.

As I begin to wind things up for a well earned break, I thought I would treat you to reviews of three singles I have had in recently. Normally I would do each one separately but, there are times when you just have to get these things done and so, here are three hot new singles from across the UK.

 

 

Holdin’ Court

Holdin’ Court is the debut from the duo of Producer Boswell Thomas and Emcee >ARRO, which is released through the awesome Nuke Fam Records. It was originally released back in April and the first thing to note about this is the solid upbeat feel of this one. Boswell brings this thumpin’ beat over which is this mix of synth vibes which gives the track this sound that has a summer banger feel and raises your positive vibes, it just has one of those feels that you want to bounce to with a broad smile on your face.

>ARRO brings us slick vocals that allow you to hear every word as he drops some solid bars that introduce us to both himself and Boswell. He gives us a deep dive into just who they are, what makes them tick, and what they are here to do in the game. What you get from this is a sense that these guys have been there, maybe set back from the forefront of the UK Hip Hop scene but, that has allowed them the time and space to practice and hone their respective crafts ready to drop this one, just when the time was right, giving us a chance to see that they have the skills to walk-the-walk as well as talking the talk.

Holdin’ Court is a solid debut by Boswell Thomas and >ARRO that is released through one of the UKs top underground labels, the perfect platform to let these guys do their thing and bring the UK some hot new Hip Hop sounds to get us all rockin’.

 

 

Journey

Jonie D is no stranger to the blog. He is one of the KAOS Crew and featured here with the release of their Over The Iron Bridge album back in March 2024. Jonie D is now back with this single which comes hot on the back of his last solo album SENA (2024). Journey features production from Diaz TowerZ, who also produced a remix album of the KAOS Crews Over The Iron Bridge.

 Diaz TowerZ brings a heavy beat that is backed by this, electronic sound that is almost softened into the background. This creates this sound which has a soulful edge with a vibe that brings a reflective energy to it, carrying you along as you listen intently to the lyrics.

Jonie D gives us a look at how the lives of people can flow in different directions as they navigate the unpredictable nature of the river of live. As you listen to the words, and perhaps even read the lyrics that are there on the Bandcamp page, you realise that these lives could be those of anyone around us, they might even reflect parts of your own lifes journey; and this sets up that reflective edge perfectly, giving you the push to actually sir back and look at where you are now and how you came to be here.

This is one of those tracks that touches you in different ways, as it allows you to just listen and enjoy the flow, or actually allow yourself to get immersed deeply into the words, feeling them as Jonie D expertly weaves intricate and conscious bars that are more than just words alone.

 

 

Ripple

I have featured Unity on the blog before, most recently with her EP with Zee Rock, The Witching Tree (2023). Unity is now back with her latest single Ripple. Ripple is the first single from the forthcoming project with Cardiff legend DJ Jaffa ‘Where We Belong’.

DJ Jaffa provides the production and the cuts on Ripple, giving us a chilled out Hip Hop vibe that mixes a solid beat with some mellow guitar vibes. Putting you in mind of warm summer days spent by the sea or walking among the trees as a light breeze takes the edge off the heat that beats down from the sun above.

Unity uses this chilled out vibe to showcase her poetic lyrics that seem to connect with you and put you into dreamy almost meditative state of mind. Her words here speak od a deep connection with nature and really letting the beauty that you see around you, sink into the very essence of your mind, body and soul, feeling how it touches you in different ways letting emotive energy and inspiration flow from deep within. That inspiration is another key factor in the track which also inspires you to connect with your own personal creativity. We all have that within us and its all about feeling those good times, seeing the beauty around us and letting that bring forth our own creative side.

This is something that I can personally associate with after finding my own creative side after being inspired by connecting with myself, music and the people and nature around me here in somerset. So, I know we all have it deep within us as I never thought I had a creative bone in my body. So, you too can find your creative side and see where it takes you.

 

So, there we have three singles, that on the face of it, are very different but, what they show us is the wealth of talent that is across the UK. Although these three tracks seem different in their production, flows and delivery, what they have in common is that each speaks, between the lines maybe, on creativity and a connection with what is in the world around us. That connection might be music, it might be nature, or it might even be how we live our lives and reflect on them but, there is connection there all the same.

This also, for me anyway, shows how music, in this case Hip Hop, can unite us all in a shared love of something that inspires us all in the same way. I say this because it is something that I have always been inspired by within the Hip Hop community, and that is that shared love of this music and culture brings us all together, it does not judge us for who we are, where we are from, or the colour of our skin, and that is something that I find deeply inspiring in a world where we are literally encouraged to be separate from those around us. Remember, we are all the same colour underneath, and we all bleed the same. Think of that as you listen to these tracks.

EP Review: Rising Sun EP by Blaktrix & Relense

This week I welcome Cardiff’s Blaktrix back to the blog who teams up with Brighton based producer Relense (who has also featured on the blog before) to bring us the Rising Sun EP.

The promo I received for this EP promises that it to be a dark, reflective, and unapologetically different 3-track EP by two artists that are clearly in the zone right now. Atmospheric, dark introspective beats expertly crafted by Relense meet Blaktrix signature rhyme style that as he says 'lets it all out and lays the art' combine to create a 3 track EP you can listen to as one.

With that on my mind, I’m not gonna mess about here but get straight into it.

We kick things off with the title track Rising Sun. Relense gives us a beat which is almost softened into the background by keys and double bass notes, giving this one a deep vibe that you can’t help but, subtly nod your head to. With this one, Blaktrix uses his skilful word play to bounce us between lines that have a more political edge and those where the vibe has a far more personal feel. There is a depth here that seems to transport you beyond those political and personal aspects; giving you a vision in your mind that makes you see that no matter the darkness that you see around you, there is always a way to bring the light and raise the energies to a more positive level.

Next up is Say My Name, where Relense brings a beat where the drums are sparce but, still carries you along while the strings and bass merge to create this atmospheric air that gives you a laid-back edge bringing focus to the vocals. Blaktrix gives us words that speak on his love of the craft and the aplomb with which he delivers every word, line and bar. This is telling it like it is, without the braggadocio, and who are we to disagree; at the end of the day, it’s not about the names you can drop the realness in the words that you do say…

The EP rounds off with Soul Blade and Relense brings a beat that raises the adrenaline levels with a heavier sound. The drums boom and the strings and guitars produce a sound that you feel throughout your entire body. Blaktrix goes in hard on AI and the idea that we could be living in a simulated reality where nothing is as it appears and most of earth’s inhabitants are asleep to what is truly happening around them but, it is looking deep within and finding your own Soul Blade that can help you break free of this false reality, and see the true reality in which you exist.

 

What is instantly apparent when listening to this is the fact that you can really relate to everything that is said here and the deep vibes created by each track. Be it seeking the light from the darkness and creating your own light when you unite with another or seeing those who choose to drop big names instead of being truthful in the words they speak or breaking free of the false reality that is perpetrated by the media and the powers that be.

Relense brings some flawless production that instantly creates the perfect sound scapes for the words of Blaktrix. Each beat is fundamentally anchored in the Hip Hop sound but, he brings an atmospheric quality to each that allows to really immerse yourself into what you are hearing; and this is gives and extra depth to the skilful and intricate wordplay from Blaktrix.

Blaktrix gives these deep lyrics that seem almost too complex at times but, are also matter of fact in the message they deliver when you take the time to truly listen to what is being said. His voice has a quality and depth to it that makes you feel that what he bringing is personal view of what he sees around him, daily. But, at the same time, he could be speaking on the experiences of one of us at the same time.

Overall, the Rising Sun EP delivers deep and relatable content that is delivered in high quality, both musically and lyrically. Regardless of whether you are listening to this one as the sun sets, rises, or as the world passes you by in the car, you won’t be able to escape the messages within, and it will be one you will come back to time and again.

Big shout also goes out to the one Rola who mixed, mastered, and engineered the whole EP.

Album Review: Taxi Ride by KJ

Its always good to review something a little different and Taxi Ride by KJ from Barry in Wales, promises to be just that with a more Lo-Fi Hip Hop vibe. In fact this one has been out for a bit now so, its good to be able to bring it to you.

Before I go any further, let me give you a bit of background on KJ; He was born in Burnley, Lancashire and moved to the Vale of Glamorgan at the age of two. His fascination with rap began at age 6 when he heard Eminem’s ‘My Name Is…’ on a tape his mother gave him. It was from age fourteen that he began writing his own lyrics, freestyling and battling, while having fun expressing himself. His father gave him CD’s by the likes of Dr Dre, Snoop, Tupac, RUN DMC and MC Eiht, further inspiration came from Gang Starr, Notorious B.I.G and many others. At age eighteen he applied to college but, owing to a late submission and an on the spot interview, including a freestyle for the tutor, he was successful and studied Music Technology for two years before leaving early to make his own music from home. Over the next few years he gained experience by busking in London, Birmingham and Swansea. In July 2019, his love of Battle Rap took him to his first rap battle on Don’t Flop at Cardiff’s Moon Club, quickly followed by another in Bristol in November 2019. Although his main influence is Hip Hop, KJ has also delved into other genre’s including Garage and House music.

Now you know a bit more about KJ, the album is seventeen tracks deep and fully written, produced and mixed by the man himself which promises something that has a far more personal vibe to it. Now, KJ was kind enough to send me a physical copy of the album for this review and flicking to the inside cover and reading the notes there, you get the sense that Taxi Ride is not something that is all about a ride from one place to the next but, more a of a ride along the journey of life and the choices you make and the destination that each one of those choices takes you too, an interesting thought in itself…

So, feel free to take a seat next to me in the back of the cab and see where the ride takes us…

Our Taxi Ride begins with the short Injector Deck (skit) which is the sound of a cassette being placed into the tape deck and pressing play. Now wondering what kind of a ride this is gonna be we get straight into the title track Taxi Ride, where guitar notes and keys produce a chilled air while the drum beat gives you just enough to slowly nod your head and move to, just like sitting in the back of a cab as it slowly bounces down the road. This one reminds me of my own days as a cabbie, taking people from one place to another, maybe home or maybe on to another bar or club, sometimes talking and other times not. It perfectly encapsulates the place of the passenger, with nothing particular on their mind just wanting to get where they are going, wherever that might be, watching the world go by. Next up Whispers brings organ notes as the foundation for the sound, which seems to vibrate slowly through your mind as you listen, leaving you just floating. Here we seem to be paused, stationary in a space where a wealth of thoughts suddenly invades the serenity of the ride. The stresses and strains of the world around us are all to real leaving us wondering which way to go but, those thoughts are whispers in the mind, and the ride continues. Bass and keys combine with more upbeat drums to get your head nodding once more. However, there is a deep edge to this as our journey now touches on fear with Ghost. The roads, and life, are a place where we experience many things and fear, alongside death, is a part of that. What if you were on the other side of the veil, what would that look like, perhaps something like this…

Failing mixes another head nod beat with bass, keys and electronic elements that get you moving but, once again gets you focused on another part of life as fear once more hits us but, here it’s the fear of failure and the fear of actually reaching out for help, something many of us can associate with on some level. Organ notes and drums bring a more upbeat vibe on Imperfections, helping to bring an uplifting feel to proceedings. With so much fear coming through, here we see that there is always someone out there who can see all that we are and will still accept us, listen and help us through those dark times. Guitar and organ notes lead us into Broke Happiness, which has this sound that keeps the uplifting vibes going. This one takes a light-hearted look at a life where money comes hard, where you’re living from week to week on whatever you can. Not working, for whatever reason, is a tough place to be but, if you can face it with a smile then it helps keep the dark clouds at bay. Don’t Care drops with a heavier sound of drums and organ notes that bring a slightly darker edge to things. This is one of those tracks that you take a few ways, is this just someone who does not care about anything or is this taking a shot at the social media generation where so many people publish their lives on line in words or videos just to get likes, maybe its even deeper than that, in a world where social media brings so many things into our awareness every day, perhaps this is how it feels sometimes when it all gets too much…

False Idols mixes some chilled guitar and piano notes with drums, which gives this one a more reflective vibe. There is a deeply personal edge to this one as it focuses on those we looked up to when we were young. Those we thought it was cool to be a round, even though they really lead us astray. As we grow, we see the things about them we never saw before, a darkness that leads them down a dark path. We understand what it was that them that so attracted us to them and wonder how they got to this place, and perhaps they could change if they just had the right help. Piano and an excerpt from ‘After Life’ leads us into Ask Me If I’m OK, as the beat drops in, you realise there is more to this one than you thought. There is a definite emotive edge to this one as it looks at something that we all need to do, check it with someone. So, many of us have gone through times where we were struggling on the inside, wondering why life is treating us this way and whether it’s really all worthwhile; deep inside we just wish someone would ask us if we are ok. We have all been there and we all know someone who is in that place, they might not look it but, just check in with them, it’s a life saver. Okaaayyy has a vibe you can shut your eyes to and drift away to as the drums, bass and organ notes merge together and float through your mind. It really speaks to you, if you’ll let it, and it seems to be all about looking at things differently, looking at yourself differently and seeing what is not needed and discarding that in exchange for what helps bring more light and positivity your way…

Music has this big synth sound, alongside the drum beat, which has this infectious quality and brings this upbeat vibe that almost has this neo soul, electronic sound to it. This track is another that seems to have dual meanings; on one side it is all about the love in your life and just what that person means to you but, on the flip side, this could also be an ode to exactly what music itself means to you and how it helps you be who you truly are. Cuts and a proper head nod beat merge with strings and other elements to bring a far more solid Hip Hop sound on God Tier. This one is just a platform for KJ to drop a track that is all about having fun on the mic, no need to think too much about this one because, just like life, we all need those just for fun moments, and this one is one of those tongue-in-cheek moments for sure.  Drums and strings form the backdrop for Do Anything For You, which brings a more emotive vibe; something that fits perfectly with the lyrics. This one is a truly heartfelt ode to his daughter, and tracks like this never fail to bring a warm feeling inside and a lump to the throat…

As we begin to come close to the end of our journey together, there is still time to take in a little more of life and guitar notes herald the arrival of Your Friend. The drums pound on this one, a little like the message contained within. This one looks at the one friend you rarely, if ever, think of and talk to, the one friend who will never leave you; and that’s you. Again, you could take this one two ways as it could be the words of someone who struggles with their mental health and tries to escape the voices in their head but, perhaps its more simple this time, maybe it’s just about understanding and being one with who you truly are inside because, you are the one person you can always count on to be there for you and it’s never to late to take some time just be you, at peace with yourself. We finally take the penultimate turn to our destination and begin to Unwind with piano notes, strings and drums, creating chilled but uplifting sound. Here we find KJ speaking on all the things you could do to take some time away from the struggles and strains of modern-day life. It is always important to take time to look after number one, and number one is you, so take those moments for you and do whatever that brings calm and peace to you. Just as we thought we had reached our destination, the driver takes one last turn bringing us home with the bonus, Not Going Anywhere. Keys create this electronic soundscape that is a platform for KJ to open up about what it means to him creating music, in a spoken word intro. The beat drops in with heavy drums and strings, alongside electronic elements to bring some energy; energy which is needed as KJ speaks candidly on himself, his life and what he sees around him. He drops a great verse namedropping all those artists that have inspired him along the way. This track is not just about KJ though, this is an inspiring message to everyone to never give up and always strive, never give up and make your dreams come true…

The first thing to note about this album is that Taxi Ride does just that, it takes you on a ride and one that covers the kind of subjects that you could easily see yourself pondering over while you were sat in the back of a cab as it heads toward your ultimate destination. Just as life is also a journey, one that you are in control of, making decision after decision as you head toward your own ultimate destination. It does not matter where you are from, this Taxi Ride could very easily be your own.

There is a lot here to like for those who enjoy good Hip Hop, as well as those who enjoy Trip Hop or other sub-genres. KJ shows that he is just as adept as a producer as he is lyrically. He is adept at painting a picture in your mind Beit with words or music, which is so important when you are doing this solo. Vocally, his wordplay is on point as you hear that he has the adaptability to mix up his flows alongside some intelligent and, at times, emotive lyrics; while showing he is not afraid to bring lived experience into tackling sensitive subjects. His dedication and those inspirations really do shine through here and gives you an album that you’ll happily have on repeat and will also be as relatable in a few years as it is now.

Overall, I enjoyed Taxi Ride as it showed one person’s passion and dedication to bringing great music to people who enjoy it. KJ shows great talent in self- producing, mixing and writing his material and adding in qualities and subject matter that is easily relatable to all who hear it. This is an album to be proud of as an artist and one that needs to be heard by the listeners. Taxi Ride is definitely high on my albums of the year so far and one I can easily chill out to.

No matter what my thoughts are, KJ’s ultimate destination right now is made plain and simple by the last track, he’s Not Going Anywhere…

Note: I just wanted to add a little additional nugget here. After I wrote the review, I sent it over to KJ so he could have a read before it goes live. Now one of the things that came out of this was that my interpretation of the track ‘Do Anything For You’ was slightly off. This shows just how much you own feelings can change the way you interpret the content of a track. The track is in fact about his sister and how much she means to him as a brother, and if you listen back, you can really feel that; what happened with me is that the emotions in the track and how KJ describes his love for his sister, touched my feelings for own children and how much they mean to me. The emotions of my children living in Ireland and the loss of my youngest daughter, were deeply stirred by this track and had a huge impact on how I did my own interpretation. This is a great way to show just how we can all see and feel things differently, depending how we listen to and hear the words mixed with our own feelings and experiences. Just missing a word here and there and overlaying your own feelings can change things for you. I just felt compelled to note this for you.

ALBUM Review: DEF CULT by Junior Disprol

I think its fair to say that in the last five years the man from Cardiff, Junior Disprol has been on something of a roll. First came DEFVALLEY in 2019 followed by two huge releases in 2022, Hung Drawn and Slaughta’d with Krash Slaughta and DEF II; then in 2023 came Uber Magnetic alongsideRoughneck Jihad, the build up to which was something truly inspired and introduced us to the Hidden Content Club from the label Plague.

Well, now in 2024 the Hidden Content Club is back and treated us to a bonus pack and single release that featured a non-album track, The Fun and The Horror, and a remix of the track Hawk Ghost. This was all as the precursor to the third outing in Junior Disprol’s Def Series, DEF CULT. Once more brought to us on the Plague label and, as with both previous DEF releases, Produced by Cool Edit Chud. It features appearances from DJ Jaffa, Krash Slaughta, Stepchild and his Uber Magnetic partner in rhyme Roughneck Jihad. The album also features some stunning artwork from John Stark, just to put the icing on the cake.

Now, Junior Disprol is no stranger to this blog and as such, needs no introduction, so let’s not beat around the bush here and get straight into the DEF CULT…

There is no hanging around here as DJ Jaffa joins JD on the opening track Marvelous, which perfectly sets the tone of the album with a nice head nod drum beat which is surrounded by this eerie mix of bells and nature sounds that all comes together to give you the impression you’ve been drawn into some weird nightmarish world. This is Junior Disprol’s world, a place where expecting the unexpected is the norm and it is hard for the neurotypical mind to even conceive of what now put in front of it. Here he shows you exactly why he is so marvellous in what he does by taking words, phrases and more, mixing and weaving them into something you would never think possible, and when you mix all that with the music, reality is thrown out of a window, a window that doesn’t exist or does it? With all expectation cast aside the sound move to slick funk vibe with drums and guitar taking the forefront for The Fly Most, if you know your Hip Hop then you will know that being ‘fly’ was all about being the best, dressing the best and so on. So, is JD speaking on being the best here or is about a fly or being a fly on the wall? You decided because this is one of those that seems open to interpretation, and after a number of listens I wanted to go with the traditional Hip Hop view and that JD here is just showing what it is the be the fly most on the mic. Up next is A Murmur Forms, which has recently seen a video release, and has more of a jazz vibe with the horns, bass, and drums, which loop and switch creating a sound which tests your nerves as it progresses. JD’s words seem to tear at every brain cell, threatening to turn your awareness inside out. The world around is what seems to form into a murmur as Junior Disprols words and flows form into a dazzling murmuration of their own, mimicking that of a flock of starlings over the somerset levels…

Can We Live finds the drum beat almost softened into the background as a nerve tweaking electric guitar loop grabs your awareness, threatening not to let go. JD takes a look at the state of society and Britain, a place you can no longer call great. How can a person or a family truly live in this society when we are constantly being priced out of everything we need to survive, while the 1% flourish and stand, not on the shoulders of giants but, on the desperate figures of the working class, the infirm, the disabled and corpses of the fallen. It’s a bleak look at life but, that’s life right now. With your mind reeling from what it has just had to comprehend, it’s time for DJ Jaffa to join Junior Disprol once more and to punch and slice a hole in those dark storm clouds with Ready Rock. The head nod beat takes us on a more upbeat vibe while the eerie xylophone sounds keep us in that weird twilight world but, this one creates a seed inside you that blooms almost immediately and bears fruit that you can only taste with your soul because this is what the energy of the music can do for you if you allow it in. There is this sense that the creation and the feeling of the music is able to clear the darkness from most recesses of the mind. So, when you’re ready, feel the music, let it in and get ready to rock. Now feeling a bit more upbeat it’s time for the albums title track to be unleashed, DEF CULT.  The drums and guitar that forms the main element of the beat here has a melodic quality that has you quietly nodding along, focusing on the words, while every now and again there is a burst of guitar that stops you relaxing to far into that sound. Having given you the foundations, JD now hypnotises you, taking control of your mind, he delivers words that infiltrate every corner of your mind and making you a newly ordained follower of the DEF CULT.

It’s perfect timing that you are now in the cult and your mind is focused on this one thing because, if you are listening on the vinyl, it’s now time to flip to the B-Side, something you now do in an almost trance like state. I Got It Going Awwn takes you into a TRON like world with solid boom bap beat alongside electronic sounds that digitize your every thought from this moment on. If it can rhyme with Awwn then its Awwn, that’s what its all about here; well almost. There is a moment, where JD emulates the Ruler Slick Rick, that brings an almighty grin that comes out from within. Suddenly you begin to realise that this cult is not something to fear but, something to revere. That sense of living in a digital world now takes on an eerie twist as the electronic and other sounds whirl around the head nod beat like a plethora of spirits released from purgatory. Krash Slaughta joins JD to help slice through the ghostly fog allowing your body to soak up the vibes. Here you find Junior Disprol speaking on being a Magus Of Phrase. But what does that mean? Well, the definition of Magus is a conjurer, sorcerer, or a magician; so, what he is saying here is that he is a magician when comes to creating something with words and you simply can’t argue with that the more you listen. The vibe switches once more as drums, guitars and keys combine for a sound that would not be out of place an album from the Doors, it has that kinda Hip Hop psychedelic feel. Hawk Ghost dispels any last vestige of dark clouds that might have remained as its energy raises you up to a new level, while keeping you in that altered state of reality. This time Junior Disprol switches from speaking through a ghostly haze to taking on the essence of a spiritual form, soaring high above and looking down on what’s around and channelling that into words and phrases that boggle the mind as you search for the source but find only words that seem to appear from nowhere…

Your eardrums vibrate with the power of the beat, bass and horns as Def At Behest explodes into your awareness. Soon, strings are introduced that have you looking over your shoulder, looking for what’s coming with a sense of foreboding like a movie soundtrack vibe. Listening to this one might make you wonder just what this is all about but, try listening a few times and that think of the title and what it means? Def is all about being the best and by doing that at behest means you are doing it by instruction or by command; so here maybe, its all about JD showing how good his skills are by his own instruction? Being an emcee is all about honing your skills from life, from what you see about you day by day, you are literally teaching or instructing yourself, that’s how you learn. Think about that as you listen and if it speaks to you. Now, time is ticking by and as you move into the album’s penultimate track the Domesday Clock. Drums, bells, bass, and horns form a huge sound that has that that soundtrack vibe about it, one that makes you feel you have stepped into a pool of shade among the sunlight. With that air of foreboding setting around you once more you find that you are stood in an equilateral triangle with an emcee at each apex; perhaps it’s a circle not the triangle you first thought but, anyway, Junior Disprol is followed by Roughneck Jihad and finally Stepchild, each one displaying their individual rhyme skills as the doomsday clock ticks another second but, that second feels like a minute or a whole day as the words float through you awareness; you realise there is so much around us that signifies we are headed towards a doomsday but, you also realise that we are the ones who can also reverse that and stop the clock ticking down to its ultimate conclusion. As you contemplate that thought you realise that the album is about to reach its own conclusion and you have reached Def Not, the final track. Keys, guitars, and drums create a reflective vibe and one that feels you about to enter something deeper than has gone before. The intro makes you feel this one needed time to get going, like it needs a few deep breaths first and as JD begins to speak you realise why those feels occurred to you; not everything is DEF in life and this one finds Junior Disprol speaking on the loss of his mother. This one is by far the deepest track on the album, and I could feel every word, deep in my own heart having lived this same story with the loss of my own mum back in 1995. What can you say, treasure every moment with those you love and enjoy those moments to the fullest. The track ends with an upbeat, high energy guitar solo, just get the adrenaline pumping once more and leaving you with much to think about…

 

Just take a breath because that was some ride. In fact, there is this feeling that DEF CULT is an album of two halves, as seems to have two different vibes running across the two sides of the album, if you have the vinyl, or between the first six tracks and second six. The first half appears to have a slightly darker air about it, laying out the foundations and showing you what’s going on around you or inviting you to see it. But the second half has this far more upbeat vibe to it raising you up most of the time and giving you a reason to feel that its not all bad out there and it ends with a touching ode to his mother that is such an awesome way to end the album, with such an emotional sentiment. It’s just breath taking from start to finish.

I may have said this before but, what the heck, I’m gonna say it again, for me, Junior Disprol is one of the most underrated emcees on the UK scene, if not the entire Hip Hop scene, at this time. I don’t know of anyone who can take words that seemingly have no place together and spin them into something that is entertaining and speaks to you on some strange unconscious level. He just has a masterful way with words, like the title of the track Magus Of Phrase, he truly is a master sorcerer of words and rhyme.

I couldn’t wrap up this review in any way without mentioning the work of Cool Edit Chud on this one. As with JD being a wizard with words, Chud is a wizard of the beats. He is perfectly able to emulate the vibe of JD’s words and together they just craft something where the music and words vibe so well together. It is almost like these two are an extension of each other, they work so well together. The different vibes and sounds created by Chud work so well with JD’s vision for his lyrical content and mood.

Having appearances by DJ Jaffa and Krash Slaughta on the cuts, along with Roughneck Jihad and Stepchild adds flavour to the whole project while taking nothing away from Junior Disprol and Cool Edit Chud.

DEF CULT is the kind of release that Hip Hop needs to carry it forward. It has that nod to the real Hip Hop sound but, draws on a lot of different inspirations along the way. It also has a sound that has definite mass appeal and is not likely to get old very quickly. This has to be another contender for album of the year, in my humble opinion. It’s a perfect fit with the two previous Def albums and might just be the icing on the cake…

Single Review: Thoughts by SayKriDD Daly

Thoughts is the latest single from Cardiff emcee SayKriDD Daly, it is also the first single from his upcoming album Lost, Love: Lessons. He has featured on this blog before, way back in 2020 when I reviewed DJ Sammy B (Jungle Brothers) album BushCamp The Mixtape. As this is the first time I have featured his solo work I asked him to give me a little background. So, here is a bit about the man himself, in his own words...

SayKriDD Daly hiphop artist from Cardiff known for his witty lyricism, catchy hooks and energetic performances have led him to support acts such as RA The Rugged Man, Skepta, Wiley, Crazy Town, Tinie Tempah, DJ Whoo Kid, Bashy, Chipmunk and many many more around the UK, aswell as working alongside hiphop legends from New York, The Jungle Brothers and featuring on Sammy B's album. 

SayKriDD has featured on hiphop websites such as HipHopDX, radio plays globally, charted on Amazon with his album 'Growing Up Daly' and many more achievements. 

With accomplishing some success as an underground independent artist with his many styles of hiphop from pop rap, to boom bap to party and dubstep style rap, it shows SayKriDD Daly is very versatile and an artist that will be around for a long time...

So, now you know a bit more about SayKriDD Daly, lets get into the single...

There is a chilled jazz vibe to the sound on this one which is provided by the horns and piano, the melodic sound of the drums adds just enough to give this a jazz hop vibe. There is also a reflective edge to this one too, and one that comes, not just from the music but, also from SayKriDD’s words. The more you listen to this one, the more you can really feel the words and their meaning (Check the video below too for the words and the music). Thoughts takes us on what is very much a reflective journey as SayKriDD opens up about his own struggles through life, making the same mistakes, over and over again, something that so many of us can associate with in our own lives; what this does is give you that sense that you are not alone in your own struggles and that it is ok to speak out, because we can only begin to heal when we accept that there is something that needs healing.

Being such a deeply personal track, the essence of this one stays with you long after the music is done and leaves you with much to think about. It also gives you a glimpse into what to expect from the album and if Thoughts is anything to go by them the album promises to be an emotive ride.

This track was my full introduction to the solo music of SayKriDD and I have to say that it really touched me; this is some grown man Hip Hop for those who are not afraid to look at their shadow self and confront what is there before moving on.

EP Review: The Witching Tree by Unity and Zee Rock

I last featured Unity back in January of this year with a review of her EP Red and Blue (Bard Picasso). It is always good to review something a little different and The Witching Tree promises that. For a bit of context here is a few words on the release…

 

The project is an experimental offering constructed using an array of samples, sound bites and adlibs from many sources. The aim with this project was for a rough and ready dusty lofi approach rather than a fully polished overall sound. Unity’s lyrics grew from the name given to each track by Zee Rock as he was creating them, and the project evolved into a collection of spells – the riddle and rhymes brewed in Zee Rock’s cauldron. ‘The Witching Tree’ features cuts from Zee Rock, as well as from Cardiff HipHop legend DJ Jaffa, and features Welsh MC’s A Gent Orange and Luce Kanon, Tewkesbury’s Farai and an overseas contribution from Hush (Philadelphia, USA).

Expect intricate rhyme schemes, abstract lyrical storytelling, and a layered soundscape of sampled vinyl deep from Zee’s crates. The project includes a tale of twin aunties moving through a surreal cityscape, the afterparty, as well as deeper musings about the world and our place in it on the opening and closing tracks.

The pair first collaborated on Unity’s debut release ‘Progress is a Process’ (Later) in 2020, followed by a track featuring Asha Jane ‘Four Leaf Clover’ on her ‘Garden of my Soul’ project, and on a third track ‘I’m Alive’, from Unity’s ‘Diving Deeper’ project (Bard Picasso, 2021), featuring Galaxy Sega who has created the artwork and animations for ‘The Witching Tree’.

 

The Witching Tree sounds like an intriguing journey, so join me for the ride…

 

The EP begins with Habitually, the first thing that strikes you is that raw, unrefined sound that was the basis of the project. The heavy drum beat, and guitar vibes are Records underpinned by these multiple layers of sampled sounds and vocals. But the overall vibe you get from the sound here is deep funk, boom bap one that gets the head nodding. Unity and Luce Kanon use their differing styles to great effect here, Unity with her more spoken word style and Luce with a full on high paced rap style, to weave a message that it is rooted in nature and the spirits which abound there. This one really seems to be focused on the self, the person you will be when you constantly do the same things over and over again, especially within our current society and focused wholly on city life, how people see you and material wealth. The message here is not to forget the power of nature, removing yourself from habitual life and remember your true self.

 

All The Freaky People has a melodic funk sound that sees a lo-fi drum sound mixed with bass, keys and more intricate samples and sound bites. The overall vibe this creates has this almost out-of-body feel to it, causing your awareness to float along to the sound. Unity invites all those freaky people to the after party but, what kind of after party is this? It’s a place where anything goes as you follow Unity’s pied piper figure. This is an after party where Hip Hop people, walk barefooted into the fields, baring their souls to the music, the art, and more; this is where the true nature of your love of the culture and the sound will abound, and you will come out the other side a changed person…

 

Twin Aunties features DJ Jaffa, Farai, and Hush, on a beat that has an infectious edge to it. The drums and keys mix and complement each other creating the kinda funky sound you just wanna move to. It’s hard to get a feel for who the Twin Aunties truly are? One minute they sound like Cinderella’s ugly sisters, then in the next they seem to be more of a reflection of our own family members moving through a cityscape that is as far removed from what we see around us, as it is a true reflection of the same. As you bounce along to the track, subtlety taking in the words, you might find your self questioning your reasoning as you try figure out the true nature of those Twin Aunties.

 

The final track on the EP is Quiet Riot, featuring A Gent Orange, the drum beat switches up a few notches, backed with keys and a subtle essence of strings, it creates another infectious vibe that has a reflective edge to it. As you listen to the words on this one, it seems to sink further and further into your consciousness, encouraging you to look deeper into the world around you. For me, it brought forward thoughts of everyday people who have grown tired of fighting for their rights, the things that we should all be able to have, now we turn that fight into a quiet riot that stews within our mind, body and soul, while threatening to burst forth at any time but, only when the right questions are asked does the flood of frustration and anger explode in tirade of emotion fuelled words that come from the depths of our consciousness mixed with a passion that asks why the powers that be do not listen and only seek to control and amass personal wealth, while we pay their wages but, can’t even afford to heat our homes or properly feed our families…

 

There is a lot that The Witching Tree can elicit within you, the more you listen and really feel the music and words. Your first listen might just make you feel the sound and enjoy the ride, without thinking to much but, if you really choose to feel the vibe of this one it will open you up to questioning the nature of the world you live in.

 

Unity and Zee Rock have really crafted something that might have that experimental and raw edge to it, where you get the feeling that the words were crafted around the music and then it was all poured into an etheric cauldron, where spells were said over it and the nature spirits infused it with magical musical properties; then the finished EP gives you an entertaining listen that has a quality all it’s own, unleashing potent imagery in the mind that opens you up to another level of the true power of music. Just because The Witching Tree has it’s basis in Hip Hop music, does not mean that it cannot have a potent message on a more esoteric level, that is the power of music, regardless of the genre you use, it can help bring powerful messages alongside an enjoyable experience. The way Unity and Zee Rock have crafted The Witching Tree, it has as much power in the music as it does in the wordplay. Zee Rocks multi-layed soundscapes have a deep rugged quality to them and this perfectly matches the depth and quality of Unity’s clever and intelligent wordplay that is delivered in that, almost, spoken word style that allows to hear every word. The Witching Tree truly speaks to you on both levels of the music and words.

 

The addition of the guest artists works perfectly with the whole vibe of the EP. Plus it also shows the universal nature of Hip Hop and music. Music reflects the true nature of the world; it has no boundaries just as there should be no boundaries between us who live upon it.
