EP Review

The follow up to the recent From Darkness to Light EP from Damaged Goodz is The Patter Merchant. Where the previous EP was more of a look at real life and the struggles, strains and ultimate beauty that our journeys can bring us, here Damaged Goodz says this about his latest offering “The Worlds a pretty shit place right now, hopefully this EP gives you guys a giggle”.  With that said it made me wonder just what I was in for listening to this one.

I’m not gonna give you a big intro on this one, I did that last time, I’m just gonna dive straight into it But, before I do that, please let me warn and apologise up front for any expletive language used here in. There are a few used within the content of the EP and I may get a bit carried away myself, so apologies if you are offended by guttural language…

First up is the EP’s title track The Patter Merchant, which sets the light-hearted tone of the EP perfectly. The beat is heavy with a nice funky jazz organ sound running through it as Damaged Goodz demonstrates exactly why he is the Patter Merchant, with slick lyrical wordplay on a comical note with the track ending with excellent explanation of what a Patter Merchant really is, in case you were wondering. The intro to Revenge of the Funkmaster alone will have you spitting your tea (in fact anything you have in your mouth at the time) out. Here the beat is an absolute banger, the sort of head nod beat that makes you wanna turn volume way up. Damaged goodz uses more superhero references that you can shake a stick at to keep you entertained and grinning from ear to ear.

Art of the Devil eases back on the pace a little but, the heaviness and pounding beat. Damaged Goodz takes a light-hearted look at the darker side of humanity in his unique style. There is not much more I can say except that, strangely the chorus does seem to float about in your head. From the darer side of life to 2020, yeah not much difference there, as Damaged Goodz takes us through 2020 New Year New Me (I Smell Shite). Boombap through and through with some heavy horns to boot this one hits like a beer bottle to the head. This one is a rapid-fire assault on your eardrums about creating a new you in the face of adversity. The battle you might experience as you switch to a healthier you and way of being.

It's now time to turn the clock back with a Nod to the 90’s. If you can remember those times, the name checks, clothes etc and some of you might get the chorus of Drink, Fight, Fuck but, then some of you might not or perhaps you did it in a different order or decade, just so happens that for Damaged Goodz it was the 90’s. The beat itself is a huge reminder of those times with a classic Hip Hop vibe that put’s you in mind of that golden era. It’s the final track of the album and Damaged Goods kickz of Third Degree Burns Night with classic shout and thank you to everyone listening, OH! Sorry that was a big Fuck You, my bad. When the beat drops that’s all forgotten with a pounding beat and funk fuelled bass guitar vibe. The vision you get in your head from Damaged Goodz machine gun delivery is reminiscent of the Brandon Lee movie The Crow in which the city burns in chaos and that is exactly the picture this one paints in your mind.

Overall, I have to say this, the aim of Damaged Goodz was to make everyone laugh and have a good time and I reckon he has done a near perfect job here. Now you might think I’m talking straight bollox and that’s fine cos I’m here to give you my opinion, for what it’s worth. The whole vibe and energy of the EP is one not to be taken seriously and it’s light-hearted nature seems to permeate you whole being and helps you take on a ‘fuck it, let’s have a laugh’ attitude. You know there is all this shit, chaos and upheaval going on in the world around us and sometimes we just need to forget all that and just say Fuck It, yeah go on say it and see how you feel, good eh!

From a different point of view The Patter Merchant is like a Hip Hop stand-up comedy show. The kinda thing you might see from the likes of Frankie Boyle or the legendary Billy Connolly. You can listen and have a really great time. OK, so there is more than your average use of guttural language but, sometimes that’s ok as we need to blow off steam. There are plenty of references to our current social and economical situation as well as dipping into Damaged Goodz own experiences and it all adds up to a really great fun experience.

Damaged Goodz displays the kind of wordplay and deft delivery that are the tools a skilled emcee. He switches his delivery style effortlessly as he does in switching between subject matter. He brings personal experience and opinion expertly to whatever is the focus of a particular moment.

Musically, the production and cuts from DJ Zeeny are nothing short of Hip Hop perfection as they skilfully create the perfect backdrop for Damaged Goodz lyrical prowess.

My Advice is simple, grab this one and have a damn good time listening. More than that have a damn good giggle while you’re at it. Remember giggle and the world giggles with you, and this one could make the world giggle…
