Single Review
Embellishment is a latest single from O.Love (aka Asian Hawk) and is taken from the forthcoming album ‘Future Life Progression’.
Now most of you will know Bristol based Asian Hawk as part of The Disablists (4 times DMC title holders) and a DMC solo title holder in his own right. However, it is not just his talent behind the turntables where he excels. He is a highly regarded beatsmith and vocalist too which has led to him becoming a seminal member of Bristol acid jazz funk group ‘Jackson’. In September of 2018 he released a debut single titled I Gotta Know through Def Presse under the given name of O.LOVE.
Embellishment is described as 80’s Sci-funk and is inspired by the deep-seated duplicity woven into the fabric of society, through government, media, celebrity and the establishment, as well as in our everyday lives.
So, the best thing for me to do is dive into the track and give you my thoughts.
Embellishment really comes as a breath of fresh air. Musically it really takes me back to the 80’s and the kind of future funk and electro that became a part of the essential listening back then as I began to immerse myself into the Hip Hop sound. O.Love’s voice brings an almost dreamy quality that perfectly contrasts yet compliments the track. As you listen you are drawn into this parallel dimension of electric funk which lifts you up and carries you, floating in an alternate colourful realisation of space. As you float along the vocals reach into your mind and create this almost trippy vision of the duality of lives and everything around us. Where things are not always what they seam and those you trust often have an ulterior motive for doing or saying certain things.
Where there is darkness and deceit, there is also light and love, and Embellishment weaves this vision of being aware of the duplicity around us but, also creates this dreamscape that shows us that there is a lighter side to what is going on and that all it takes is a change in perception to see it.
I can really see why BBC Bristol chose this as their track of the week during July this year. It has this sound that you are just not hearing enough of right now and you just can’t take anything away from O.Love, he has a fantastic voice that perfectly delivers on so many levels and will appeal to a fairly sizable audience.
In my opinion O.Love is definitely one to watch because he has the talent to take his music to the next level with something that appeals to so many, and keep your eyes peeled for the release date of the album ‘Future Life Progression’ this is one you won’t want to miss.
