Album Review: (What You Acting So) Grown Up For by Legs MC

(What You Acting So) Grown Up For?

By

LEGS MC

(What You Acting So) Grown Up For? is the latest release in the Grown Up series from emcee/producer Legs MC (aka Daddy Legs). I’m reasonably familiar with this series having reviewed both the second and third releases of the series, Grown Up Too and Grown Up Free. As with the previous two releases in the series, this one also has a title that is a play on words but, what is different here is that there is only a couple of features this time around in the form of one of his sons, Raphael, and Shotty Horroh alongside the guest producers Solar Soundz and Murmur Beats. This suggests that we will be treated to a much more personal vibe on this album, even more so than the previous ones.

The only way to find out for sure is to join me as I take you through the album…

Now, the album is ten tracks long but also features a bonus track too, and it all kicks off with RAPHTMNT which features Legs MC’s son Raphael. The beat has more Lo-Fi feel to it for the first couple of minutes before we are treated a more head nod drum beat adding some adrenaline. This is like an extended intro that see’s Legs give a simple warning that focuses on the huge amount of lies and detrimental information that that is constantly thrust in our faces through our smart phones. In fact, it is true what he says here that there is a war going on inside our phones where the positive interactions we are all seeking are at odds with the stream of negativity that invades our awareness as we scroll through our daily social feeds. With such a powerful intro to the album, it gives you a real sense of what to expect and Web of Lies continues this with a proper heavy head nod vibe from drums, horns and organ notes, this gives us deep edge as we listen to the words of Legs MC. The message continues the focus of the previous track as Legs MC focuses more intently on what we see being projected to us through our phones every day. There is so much information that gives a false impression of the world around us and also of the lives of others. It appears that everyone is getting by and doing OK, when in reality it is far from that. So, many people struggle with just providing their basic needs but, they just hide the stress while at every turn it appears that their privacy is at constant threat from the apps, they use daily. It’s a wonder we even know what the real truth is anymore…

The beat on Psycho CIS gets your head nodding while the keys bring this vibe that has this John Carpenter soundtrack feel to it, giving you this dark infectious vibe. Here we initially feel that this one could be deep track focused on mental health but, there seems to be more going on here as Legs MC gives us another play on words as he describes his own talent with wordplay by bringing in the kind of punchy one liners that make you sit up and take notice, questioning exactly what the focus is and then coming away wondering if you truly got that or did Leg MC bend your mind a little too far. With your mind now in a state of flux, beat drops with a little edge to it that suggests something a little more light-hearted on Rappin’ Ain’t Easy. This short little number does exactly what it says and sees Legs MC drop a single verse that says, if you think its easy to do this rap stuff, then think again, because it takes a lot to do this while entertaining people and being able to say stuff that they can relate to, over and over again. Solar Soundz makes his first appearance with production on Digital Flowers, the sparce beat and electronic vibe carry you along while allowing you to focus more on the lyrics. This one sees Legs MC take a look at the digital music world where so many artists are focused on getting their flowers, those digital clicks, likes, thumbs ups and so on, that help push their music that bit further. But is it really all about that? Do you miss why you love doing what you do by constantly placing so much value on the digital fanbase. Sadly, the digital world is becoming more and more influential in what we do, including the music we love. It’s a sobering thought…

Hazey Purple is produced by Murmer Beats and features Shotty Horroh. The drums and guitars give this one a Hip Hop mariachi feel. It’s that mariachi story vibe that permeates this one as Legs MC and Shotty Horroh drop some emotive lyrics around smoking, being a stoner, why you do it and how it affects your life. There is definitely aspects of this one that really have that deep edge to them, taking you into the life of those seeking to escape reality for different reasons and leaves you thinking after the track is done. Organ notes and strings combine with head nod beat to bring another sound that gets you moving for Diamond in my Belly. This one is really about following your gut feeling when it comes to making those important decisions in life; those times where it’s make or break and you need to following that feeling that points you in the right direction. Now, your gut feeling might not always be the best decision but, by knowing you did it for the right reasons means that someone will benefit from it, even if that someone is not you directly. The drum beat for Take Me as I Am, keeps your head moving while the piano seems to envelop you in an emotional vibe. Here we find Legs MC opening up about who he is and the fact that he is not a person you can place neatly in a little box; you have take him at face value as an individual who does not prescribe to your personal ideas of how a person should, or shouldn’t, be. It really is that simple, so don’t be judgemental…

Murmer Beats provides production on Come Into My Life with an uplifting soulful vibe of organ notes, bass and drums. Legs MC mixes it up with rap and sung elements on this one as he brings us a beautiful ode to his wife and everything that she brings to his world. This is the kind of track that many of us guys can associate with and probably wish we had written too. This one obviously draws inspiration from the Joyce Sims track but, mixes it up nicely and ends with a snippet of a conversation between Legs MC and his wife. The final track of the album, before the bonus, is 80’s Kid, which is produced by Solar Soundz and has a chilled vibe that carries you along while this clicking keeps you rooted in the moment. There is a deep edge to this one that speaks to the older heads out there as Legs MC looks at the state of the country in the modern day, from the point of view of someone who grew up in the 80’s. Society in the here and now is far different from those times, I can vouch for that as a 70’s kid, as we now experience the kind of ups and downs our parents had but, on a whole new level, which makes you wonder what our kids will experience thirty or forty years from now. With those sobering thoughts still raw in our mind, it’s time for the final and bonus track, Stompin’, which all but wipes those thoughts from our mind by giving us a head nod vibe mixed with a heavy dose of orchestral sounds, which gives us a lift to round things off. Legs seems to take everything he has said in this album and literally stomps it into our awareness here by summing up the album for you…

I had to sit back for a minute or two and consider just what this album said to me overall, and there is a very real sense that (What You Acting So) Grown Up For is purposefully giving us a look at the ups and downs of life so that we can see just how serious and troubling it has become; and by doing that it is showing us that we need to feed that inner child inside all of us. Too much of life nowadays fills us with negativity and a sense of melancholy, to the point where there is little enjoyment left for us. But, if you listen a little more deeply to the words and pick up on the subtle hints, there is a lot to take away from this; all of which is pointing you towards lifting yourself up and finding enjoyment and love in your life once again. You can be grown up, without being so grown up…

Legs MC does bring a deeper more personal edge to this one and you really get the sense that this is one of those albums where the message was best delivered yourself and that takes nothing away from the appearance of Shotty Horroh, who does a cracking job here and perfectly adds to the message Legs is putting across.

I think that what really spoke to me on this one is the sense of all the things that mean so much to him, the very same values that mean so much to all of us, Beit family, love or our passion for something, it is all there and makes something that might appear so deep and dark, become the exact opposite. Sometimes you can only see the light by being put into the darkness.

Once again Legs MC shows the depth of his talent and how he uses his adept wordplay to create a highly enjoyable album that speaks to you on many levels, and it is the relatability of the albums content that makes it enjoyable and a great addition to the Grown Up series.

There really is so much to like here, the production from Legs, Murmer Beats and Solar Soundz, mixes Hip Hop beats with lo-fi, cinematic and orchestral sounds, all of which come together to bring some emotive vibes, which seem to really enhance and support the vocals. Legs vocals, once more, show that he is a talented emcee who draws on personal experience to bring extra depth to his work. He also delivers his lyrics in a way the makes you feel he is speaking to you on the same level and not trying to down to you or tell you what you do. It’s just directing you to look at things differently.

(What You Acting So) Grown Up For? is another cracking album from Legs MC that you need to check out for yourself. It is released tomorrow, 22nd, and is a great listen for the weekend.

Now, this was to be the end of the review But, following an email chat with Legs MC I decided to include some valuable insights around this album that will give you a little more to ponder over. So, I thought would add these as if it were a mini-interview type of thing:

You have the name Legs MC aka Daddy Legs, can you tell me a bit more about that?

Legs MC - Well when I came back to rap I kind of went with Daddy Legs MC as I didn’t really feel like I was the same person as I was before having children. My priorities, my attitudes, everything changed and a lot of what I record I imagine them listening to when they are older. For ease its still Legs MC but for anyone that knows me now Daddy Legs is prob more fitting!

My interpretation of the intro RAPHTMNT, is slightly different to how you wrote it, which kinda leads into some insights about how you approached the vocals on the album?

Legs MC - The intro has the chorus from faker breaker, a track I made in 2005ish and was my first music video. I was kind of saying it was a return to how I was when I first started which was basically not really giving a fuck what anyone thinks about it - like danny devito said I am getting old so I felt like getting weird with it - in most places in the album I am rapping my arse off but I also had quite a few moments when I was like I'm gonna sing and I'm not really bothered if anyone likes it. You could call it diminished responsibility. Be a bit more who gives a fuck.

Can you tell me a bit more about the track Diamond In My Belly?

Legs MC - The actual line "diamond in my belly" came from Zack while I was making the beat - he had put a gem on his stomach and kept saying it, then I repeated it to the beat and recorded it straight away. It also kind of meant that even if you don't like all of my content, there are gems in there if you are up for digging deep and know what to look for - like you are digging through my shit to find the diamonds - my shit may not be all bling but there is an unpolished diamond or two in there.

There is a lot of reflection on this album…

Legs MC - You're right, a lot of the album is a reflection of my past to try and work out who I am today.

Could you elaborate on the title of the album?

Legs MC - The title of the album comes from the fact my old friends would say that my music is way more serious than I am in real life, hence they would often not relate to my tunes because it was "too angry or depressing" - I think they meant moralistic lol!

Who did the artwork for the album cover?

Legs MC - My 5-year-old Zack did the drawings on the front cover.

My thanks to Legs MC for sending this one my way and for giving me those amazing insights into the album and more.

If you head over to Legs MC Bandcamp tonight at 7pm (UK Time), there is a special listening party for the the album, which is well worth your time.

The Album is released tomorrow 22nd.

So, I'm out,

I’ll see you next time,

Steve.

Album Review: Grown Up Free by Legs MC

Grown Up Free

By

LEGS MC

Grown Up Free is the third in the Grown Up series of albums from Legs MC. I featured the previous release in this series, Grown Up Too, back in August of last year and you can read that review on the link below, with will give you some background on Legs MC.

Once more on this new album Legs has brought in some top-notch guest artists, including another appearance from his sons Zackary and Raphael, alongside some additional production talent. Guests include Falle Nioke, Rhyme Advocates and DJ TGK with additional production coming from Murmur Beats, Ted Roxwell, JG Romez and Solar Sounds.

The best thing to do here is not to keep you hanging around but, to dive right into the album…

Love and Attention opens the album with a pounding beat to get your head nodding. Here Legs opens up on the negative side of social media. While the socials have their advantages in helping artists get promotion and so on, the drawback is that people spend so much time focused on scrolling, tweeting, and so on it takes attention away from the things that are most important. Heaven and Hell drops next with production from Murmur Beats. The sound has that boom bap edge with a soulful vibe running through it. The focus here is really trying to see the silver lining to all the clouds, especially in a world where you are bombarded with a constant stream of negative media reporting. It’s all about looking beyond the darkness, the pain and the suffering and having a deep knowing that the light is there, you just have to have the faith in it. With those thoughts of being stuck and not knowing where to turn, your mind drifts to thoughts of freedom, which leads to Song About Freedom; featuring Falle Nioke, solid boom bap drums and strings are backed by soulful vocals to bring a deep and thoughtful vibe. The last few years have seen so much focus on peoples seeking freedom from so much oppression, racism and control, this track really has that sense of an anthem for call to stand up for what you believe and to see freedom for all, everywhere.

Sadness and Joy features Rhyme Advocates sees drums. Bass and woodwind sounds merge to bring a head nod beat, where that woodwind sound creates a mind-bending twist. This one seems to look at two sides of the same coin but, the important thing is to remember all those moments of joy, especially in the moments where sadness grips us and we struggle, it’s remembering the joy that gets us through and shows us that things will get better. The little comedic opening to Wrong Horse, gives way to heavy drums, bass, and guitar notes, bringing a slightly dark edge to the sound. On the face of it, this might seem like a look at the so-called sport of horse racing and perhaps it is just that but, maybe there is more to this here and the wordplay has that equestrian edge to play with your mind as it’s all about Legs being an artist and being in the game for the long haul and not just to make a quick quid or two. It’s all about taking your time and honing your craft, so you are still in it when most have fallen by the wayside. Next up is The Grinch Skit, a little track that features Zakary and Raphael, the sons of Legs, giving us a fun little skit all about the Grinch over a heavy beat with keys. You can’t help but grin at this one as it brings some light relief to proceedings. This leads nicely into My Sons, a thoughtful sound is created by drums, bass, and keys, is the backdrop for Legs to drop a touching track that is focused on his sons and seeing them grow up and being the best father, you can be for them; always guiding them as they grow and take their own journey through life. There is not much more you can say about this, except that I found it really touching, as a father myself, it really echoes my own thoughts and feelings.

Conduit is produced by Ted Roxwell who brings a heavy beat alongside some keys that have you thinking of horror movie vibes. With that eerie sound floating in your awareness, it brings an interesting vibe as Legs speaks on the almost supernatural element of how his words seem to come from deep inside, in a way that seems like they control him, almost writing themselves like they possess him or are the conduit to another realm. JG Romez produces Division and uses a piano heavy sound with a pounding beat as the backdrop bringing a focus to the vocals. Legs opens up on the state of society where facts are blurred by fake news in order to cause a constant state of division between people, races, countries and more. Within this fractured society we seek to pull apart and separate the truth from the fiction, so that our children will know what’s real and what’s not. It is not an easy thing to do with the constant steam of negative media attention but, we do what we can to build a better future. Character Assassination is produced by Solar Sounds and has a more chilled LoFi sound of drums and keys with a modern ticking sound added in. This one is all about the cancel culture where anyone can be made a target and have their whole life and careers turned upside down by internet critics with little or no evidence, just hearsay.

Bragadon’t features DJ TGK on the cut, the drums are sparce and almost fade into the background as bass, keys and horns take the forefront. Legs takes the opportunity to speak on who he is and what he does as an artist but, there is not braggadocio here as he displays his talents in a way that just opens your eyes to the facts without making himself out to be more than he is. The penultimate track is Fee Fi Fo Fum where drums and guitars merge to bring a strangely enjoyable sound with a head nod vibe. This one has some slick wordplay that displays the giant size of Lags verbal talent, something that might not be immediately apparent but, first impressions can be misleading. The final track of the album is King On The Mic and hits with a heavy vibe of bass drums creating the perfect musical backdrop for Legs fully open up about just how good he is as an emcee, dropping intelligent and slick wordplay that rounds off the album in style getting your head nodding and the corners of your mouth curling up as you enjoy every word.

Sometimes it is easy to sum up the overall feel of an album and Grown Up Free one of those albums. Legs brings us another album that displays a solid balance of storytelling and real world lived experience that does not fail in its ability to be something that anyone can associate with as you listen.

The production is all on point here, be it from the guest producers or not. Creating a sound that is ultimately Hip Hop but, has those little additional influences along the way that add to the depth and quality of the sound. Not only that but, the production helps convey the words to you in such a way as to maximise the impact.

Vocally and lyrically Legs shows his range of flows and styles that work so well in delivering the depth of the message he conveys with each track. The intelligence and quality of wordplay comes from a continuous love of the music and a desire to consistently stay on top of his craft, honing and tweaking his style as he progresses. The guest artists also perfectly fit into proceedings once more, bringing that added depth, style and feeling along the way.

There is also that depth of feeling here about family and creating a path on which the next generation can walk, whilst still forging their own journey. By including his own children on a track, it really brings home that sense of family being so important and it touches a part of you very deeply and in a way that you may not actually realise until you reflect.

So, overall Grown Up Free is the perfect addition to the Grown Up series as it adds to and builds upon the foundations laid by the previous albums. Using the sound and the lyrical power of Hip Hop music to drive home both important subject matter and the need to enjoy yourself as well.

My humble thanks to Legs MC for letting me bring this one to you.

Album Review: Grown Up Too by Legs MC

Grown Up Too

By

Legs MC

Grown Up Too is the latest album from Legs MC (aka Daddy Legs), originally from Brighton, he started rapping at age 17 in pubs and clubs until he met Graff artist and producer, Req1, at a Slip Jam B open mic night. Req1 taught him the art of making beats and recording his own material. Legs went on to record a string of self-made albums, these went worldwide and earned him collaborations with artists from Japan and Australia. His own songs also featured on German record label, Moon Circle Project. 2008 saw his first professional record, Cheyne Stokes, released after he signed to Latest Records. The project featured an impressive cast list including the likes of Professor Elemental, Wordsmiff and Dizraeli. When things went ‘pear-shaped’ at the label Legs withdrew from the scene altogether, choosing to become a mature student and earn a BA Hons in Film and Screen Studies.

It was during the pandemic lockdowns that Legs returned to recording, releasing ‘7 Year Itch’ in 2022, and he kept the momentum going releasing ‘Grown Up’ early in 2023, his most important project to date, featuring Mic Righteous and Frukwan of the Gravegiggaz. He even featured in the top 100 of the Wu-Tang Clan’s Saga Continues competition. Now, five months on from ‘Grown Up’ comes Grown Up Too and without further ado, join me on trip through the album, and with features from the likes of Remark, Verbz MC (Bristol MC, not Verbs from High Focus) and Krash Slaughta, you can bet this one’s gonna be a treat…

Guitar notes and horns bring us into Wicker Manned, before the beat kicks in and gets your head nodding. In not much more than two minutes, Legs says more than some say in an entire album. He begins by looking at the control used by, and lack of respect given by the UK government and what that really says about what’s going on around us, before moving on to open up about the rap scene and those who chose not to support even though he offered the hand of friendship. There is a hint of coming together and standing as one here or to risk being ones burned in sacrifice, or could it be that Legs MC will be the one to do the burning, with a no-nonsense approach to bringing the facts and lyrics of fury? Drums and strings and the main elements of the sound of The Wizard, which has a slightly dark element to the sound but, it keeps you moving. Using a spin on the tale of The Wizard of OZ, Legs MC gives us three tales of different types of emcees, the strawman who makes a lot of money from rap without using any intellect to say anything of worth, the tinman who copies those who came before him because he doesn’t have the heart for what needs to be said and then the cowardly emcee who has all the talent to go far but, lacks the strength to put himself out there in any way be it physical content or live. Legs MC is one who leads by example using his mind, his heart and soul to bring reality and truth to his work. Bass, strings, and horns are the intro for Night Life, which features Sir Mozart on production, the beat drops in and creates this infectious upbeat sound. The focus of this one is stories from nights on the streets in Brighton but, these are taken from experience too, nothing made up here, just the stark reality of life on the streets once the sun goes down on seaside city that has a huge drug culture.

Business keeps it upbeat with a beat that thumps with drums and guitar notes. Here Legs MC details his love of Hip Hop music and keeping it real to the sound and while most of the time its all about business and working hard to produce good music, there are times when you just gotta have some fun, and this is what this track is all about, balancing the business and the just-for-fun time. Keys and strings form the backdrop the drums on Imposter Syndrome, featuring Remark, Mike Dennis and Krash Slaughta on the cuts; this one has a deep dark edge to the sound. The message here is all about the fact that no one is who they seem, or they just want to be like someone else because the media and record labels hype up the likes of Drake or the Kardashians, implying that real rappers are this or you have to look like these people and act like that person. It is thrust in our faces so much that, especially the young people, feel the peer pressure to look a certain way, and if they don’t, they will not fit in or be accepted. All this does is cause damage to their mental health, leading to so many young people seeking a way out rather than not to fit in. It is a sad state of affairs that being yourself is no longer looked on as authentic but, by being your true authentic self is the one way you can be you and not an imposter. We step over the tipping point of the album with Boss, featuring Undadwella and Verbz MC, this one has a classic breakbeat mixed with keys and bass, giving a banging boom bap, head nod sound. This one speaks to me in different ways as really shows the contrast between working the daily grind as an employee or one where you are your own boss. I have been on both sides of this; being an employee most of my life until ill health made me my own boss a couple of years ago. Being your own boss is, for me, a better situation to be in, I might not make any money right now but, at least I am not being pushed beyond my physical or mental capabilities. Now I am able to nurture the parts of me that can bring out my best abilities, something no boss has ever tried to do for me. I’m not saying all jobs are like this but, sometimes we have to decide what is best for ourselves. Sadly, the society we live in means that a job is very often the only way to make ends meet.

Next, the Rhyme Advocates, The Epochs, join Legs MC on Five Oceans. Strings and keys give this one an almost orchestral feel before the beat drops in with some horns, that give this a deeper vibe, that seems to touch your very soul. The more you listen to this track the more you pick up, the more it seems to say to you and the more it makes you think; and that is key here you need to think with this one as it really seems to be about the art of being creative and authentic at the same time. It’s about being individual and true to yourself that makes you stand out from the other around you. Do what you do but, do it in a way that is unequivocally you. What is also of note here is that Legs son’s join him on the track, they do a little bit on each album now, and Zackary (who is 4) provides the little sung intro, with Raphael (who is 3) providing the little outro. A head nod beat mixed with some electronic sounds gives Woke a kind of nerve tingling edge, making focus on the words a little more. Legs MC looks at the fine line between being awake and woke; in a culture where everyone has an opinion on everything, and the so-called cancel culture has the power to destroy a career or the hard work that has been done by someone. Are things really going too far these days, what really is the point of all this, and do you really know if you are truly awake or just think you’re woke! Think about it, I mean really think about it, only by looking deep inside yourself can you know if you are coming from yourself or just following a trend and the views of others, think for yourself, don’t let other do the thinking for you.

Angry Tune has a thumping beat with strings and John Carpenter style electronic vibes, all of which ramps up the adrenaline, getting you fired up. There are times when we all need to rant on what we see and experience around us, and this is exactly what Legs MC does here is to have a rant, not at anyone in particular but, just letting off a bit of steam, and there is nothing wrong with that. The final track is a bonus, it’s the Back to Burgess Remake, the original being from the ‘Grown Up’ album. The sound mixes drums, organ notes and electric guitar with sonic sounds, giving this a nerve shedding, mind numbing sound. Here Legs MC takes us back to being sixteen, just out of school and getting a job as a labourer, trying to make a bit of money but, all the while his mates are out having fun and getting messed up on the sherbet. It’s a tough position for a youngster to be in, you want to be out with your mates but, there is pressure on you to go get a job as soon as you can.

So, lets get real here, there is a lot to like about this album. Musically, the production is all on point here and carries the album along at a nice pace, bringing a cracking audible canvas of mixed vibes that perfectly match the vibe of the vocals. Legs MC produced, mixed, and mastered the entire album, except ‘Night Life’ which is produced, as noted, by Sir Mozart. This shows and incredible creative strength that makes the album really stand out, not just that but lyrically he is very strong too. He has a great style that mixes up the flows and has an engaging quality to it. It is kind of like you are sat listening to a lecture as someone is speaking of the real-life stories they experienced during their life. It’s hard to exactly explain it but, for lack of a better word, it is the authenticity it coveys in a lyrical sense. Top to bottom Grown Up Too is packed with authentic stories from Leg MC’s life. There are no fake stories here that have been made up just to get people listening, in fact that very thing is something that he dislikes, and which you hear mentioned.

Something that I really liked about the album was that each track gave great food for thought and its relatability gave me plenty of scope to bring my own experiences into play, alongside what he was relating from his own experiences. Grown Up Too, like a good many UK underground albums I’ve heard recently, could easily generate some healthy debates as you listen to each track, which for me shows the depth of what is going into the UK Hip Hop music right now. It also displays just how much heart is going into music from Legs MC and others, plus the love of the music and that desire to create good music.

Bringing in some cracking guests into the fold always helps and Legs MC brings in names you easily know like Remark (Glastonbury) and Krash Slaughta (Glasgow), alongside the likes of Verbz MC (Bristol), Sir Mozart, Mike Dennis, Undadwella (Australia), Rhyme Advocates (Brighton), The Epochs (Las Vegas, USA), who you might not instantly recognise but, all of whom bring that individual energy and depth to the project. It also gives that universal Hip Hop aspect to the project, once more showing how Hip Hop crosses borders and unites us through music. I also liked the fact that Legs has his sons on the album, giving them a little credit and giving that track a proper family affair kinda vibe, which brings a whole new depth and heart to things, I loved that.

Overall, Grown Up Too is a solid album which oozes authenticity, relatability and reflects the ups and downs of our current reality. This is one of those albums that will never lose its appeal as the subject matter will always be relatable in some way, shape, and form.

Most definitely one you need to give a good listen to.

Grown Up Too is released on 28th August, Pre-orders are live now.

My thanks to Legs MC and to Remark for putting my name forward.

On that note,

I’m out.

Steve
